First of all don't look toward a God. In essence it is searching for a God is a material quest. Material goods produce pleasure which is not happiness.
I would recommend looking into the biography of Buddha. I started feeling the same way and read more on Buddha who experienced almost everything I felt. It is hard, and most people will never go all the way. However the beginning is realizing what true value is on this earth.
It takes time and lots of introspecting. Write down what you think about every day and see how much is about material things. Look deeply at your life and how you've lived and how much time and energy you have spent on these material things.
Next find within yourself true happiness. No easy task but it is what takes your entire life time.
Slowly you will be thinking less and less of material things to create your happiness.

Many are telling you to look to look to Heaven/God to get out of materialism. This is folly. Do NOT look to the future. Do NOT look to a place that is not this one.
Focus on the present.
One person was wise enough to recommend Buddhism. I'll offer the same. This is no guarantee because it requires you to make some effort to stop holding onto things (unlike what most religious people do), but it is a worth a try. If this does not work, then just accept that everything here is material and impermanent - including you. Why care about caring about material things? It's part of you... and you are part of it.

I will give you a window into my personal experience...
I was in terrible debt chasing after possessions that would reflect a lifestyle of success. I had to realize that everything I had came from God and I would have to give an account for what I did or did not do with it. So I started tithing (10% of my gross to my local church) immediately. By givng 10% out of my check as the first check I write it sets a perspective for me. I closed all my credit accounts so I couldn't overspend what I didn't have.
My focus shifted to being generous because of my action of giving. Giving has now truly become an act of worhsip for me. It also requires my dependence on God as I give 10% at all times under all circumstances. It's been amazing to watch him come through...
Today I have no debt other than a mortgage and have experienced true financial freedom, meaning that it no longer matters how much I make because of how little I need.

First off, it is not your fault to be hooked on material things because it is in our spirit to crave for such. Remember, our body is also a material thing. Correct me if I am wrong: Jesus came back for His material body and brought it up with him in His return to Heaven. Even in all God's creation, it involves material thing. Everywhere around you are, one way or another, a creation of material things. Our spiritual aim is how to possess a material thing in permanence, just like Jesus. So far, if we couldn't do it, then it is pointless to hoard material things. It is a waste of time. Material things is as important as your spirit. Because it heightened or give you the kind of awareness of who you are( the spiritual one) from what you think you are ignorantly( material body).

Material things are not bad, as long as they are used as tools to help us attain spiritual wealth. If we need them, or they are a reasonable luxury, they are fine. Pray than you will not be overcome with greed, and deny yourself when a really strong material urge comes to you, and you will be fine. But denying all material wealth is an empty ritual. Moderation in all things is holy.

between the suited gaining awareness of reports of my existence in this regard replaced into once I lived in Venezuela for 2 years on a challenge. maximum people lived in dirt brick properties with corrugated tin roofs and airborne dirt and dirt flooring. lots of the extra properly off people had tile laid out on desirable of the airborne dirt and dirt. loos consisted of a hollow interior the floor surrounded by a tarp or extra corrugated tin. the hollow in lots of situations introduced approximately a small gutter that ought to run down the area of the community alongside the area of the walkway and finally end up interior the closest black river. the elementary earnings replaced into approximately $30 a month and the staple nutrition ordinary replaced into made up of rice, beans, and corn flour truffles. those ingredients have been supplemented with what ever must be grown or harvested from the mountains. All that being mentioned, those people have been the humblest, kindest, maximum desirable people I extremely have had the blessing to be around in my existence. there replaced into in no way a be conscious of grievance nor a unmarried individual who replaced into no longer prepared to offer you their final bowl of rice and not using a moments hesitation. Their hearts have been so finished that in basic terms being alive made them chuffed. I went out on the line at some point as an test and began clapping my hands. interior of a minute I had 6 or 7 people dancing! I doubt you ought to try this for the period of u . s . a . of america and get a similar reaction. As Christ mentioned, how blessed are people who're compelled to be humble, and how lots extra blessed are people who humble themselves while not having to be compelled. My advice could be to immerse your self with people who're humble and it may rub off a sprint.

The hardest but best way to learn is to lose everything. It works... When my husband broke his leg and I was off work due to pregnancy complications, we had no income... and had to survive on literally nothing.. It a tough way to learn... but it happens... hopefully you will learn that without losing everything... Life can change in the blink of an eye! Just remember that!

Prayer. Pray to God each day that you may grow in faith and love for him. Ask the LORD Jesus to help you focus on him more and more each day. God bless.
