I'm out of context here, but....I'm going to guess anyway.

I think Jesus may have meant to distance oneself from the hassles, insecurities, fear and confusion of life. To raise one's consciousness to oneness with God.

For example, in today's world, we get so hung up on things like rude people or someone cutting in front of us in a line or ill-perceived thoughts/feelings about someone.

If you separate yourself from the negativity and reach out to God, you create a better world. For yourself and for others.

I don't think Jesus would mean to be separate from all earthly activity. After all, that's a huge reason we are here.

Great question!

Many people think that the word "world" refers to the earth. Obviously, that cannot be true in this case since it is not possible for us to seperate ourselves from the earth.

1 John 2:15-17 gives us a clue. It describes the world as having a desire of the eyes and a desire of the flesh. Thus, the "world" refers to the general populace of mankind (not including true Christians). To be seperate from the world means not to adopt the views and opinions of the people around us who do not accept Bible morals.

However, more is included in keeping seperate from the "world". The Bible describes Satan as the ruler of the world (1 John 5:19; Luke4:5, 6). Hence, it makes sense that Jesus said that his kingdom were no part of the world (John 18:36). Thus, being no part of the world would include not giving our support no human governments, which are in the control of Satan and are in oppoition to God's kingdom (Psalm 2:2; 146:2) Christians are to be politically neutral. They do not vote for human leaders nor do they fight in wars for or against human governments. (Isaiah 2:2-4)

Jesus meant that we should always focus on him and on heaven. Jesus doesn't want us to be too attached to the world, and be involved in what the world says is fun or normal, such as drunkenous, premarital sex, etc. Jesus wants us to stay away from all these sinful , worldy things in order so that we can to live a spiritual LIfe filled with love and faith in Christ. God bless.

It means our allegience is to God's Kingdom only. We have nothing to do with worldly governments or politics. We do obey the laws of whatever country we are in unless they conflict with God's Laws which are higher laws.

We keep free from the things that bog us down in this old system. Such as greed, pursuit of selfess pleasures as our main goals, not cultivating love of family. By putting spiritual things first in our lives, we have a better life now and in the future.
