I was planning on doing a few backpacking trips solo this summer. I've been told that if I'm going alone, I should carry a gun with me- its sad, but single female hikers get attacked. Would it be considered a consealed weapon to carry a handgun in my pack?

I was planning on carrying it in an unzipped outside pocket, so it would be easy to access, but not visable.

If you can't see it, it's concealed. Not much good in a backpack though. If you have to ask, it sounds like you don't have much experience or training, and it would be wiser to carry some pepper spray in an accessible pocket and maybe a good survival knife (and I don't mean Rambo knife). Just a good, sturdy fixed blade knife can be used to work miracles in a survival situation.

P.S always carry a multi tool too.

If it's not in plain sight, it's considered "concealed." Why don't you consider carrying mace with you? As the saying goes: strength in numbers & that's a good thing to keep in mind when backpacking. There are so many evil people in this world.

If you want to use a gun as a better deterrant, it would be better to *show* that you are carrying by using a holster. That way, some would-be attacker can see you are "packing", from a distance and more-than-likely leave you alone (from a distance).

It depends on the state you live in. Definitely call your local law enforcement office and ask. I live in Florida and I can carry a gun in a holster loaded and in my glove box with no permit. BUT if I have it on me or in my purse it's concealed and therefore you need a license.

Trust me--it's a lot better to have it concealed than to have it in your hand. As long as you've got the appropriate lecensure, you should be fine. I'd check with the Park Dept., though.

Not much use in your backpack, youll need a permit to carry, and if the rangers find you with it just say its for bears?

Yes, it is. Would you really be able to get to it quickly in an emergency? You could openly carry a knife in a sheath on your leg or belt. That might be useful.

Yes! But the worst thing that could happen is to be charged with a "weapons" charge. If you Don't have one, you could be a victim.
