Depends on your definition of Christian.
Most non-Catholic Christian denominations accept Catholics as Christians. A very few do not.
A dictionary would say that a Christian is someone professing belief in Jesus as Christ or following the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus.
Catholics would fit this definition.
In the Nicene creed, from 325 A.D., Catholics profess:
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father.
Through Him all things were made.
For us and our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried.
On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures: He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We are baptized as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19, "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
We truly are spiritually "born again," we just don't usually use those words.
With love in Christ.

The fact that catholics believe in Jesus and that Jesus was crucified, died, buried and rose again on the third day which is the only was to get into heaven means they will be there. I have always heard people say because they pray to Mary, and other Saints in the Bible that they are worshiping idols. Which is the first commandment. Some other things about baptizing babies when they are born, also. The only requirement is believing in Jesus and what he has done and continues to do for us will get one to heaven.

I find it arrogant for anyone to snatch the role of God from Himand claim that some not-omniscient merciless mortal human can judge any human heart of another person to decree who will not come into full union with God in Heaven. That attitude which is so common among Protestant Fundamentalists of whichever sect I find to be exactly one of the things Jesus spoke most harshly about and one of the ego's favorite idolatries.
Of course,a little over a generation ago such fundamentalist attitudes towards non Catholics was very popular (if not fully official) among run-of-the-mill Catholics. I think Evangelical Protestants of all 30,00+Sola Scriptura denaominations really need some sort of Protestant Vatican II...if only we could get them all talking to each other.
Since Protestantism in all its varied and conflicted forms is really just "Catholicism minus" much or little, for Protestants of any flavor to bar Catholics and Orthodox from Heaven is just projections of forms of insecurity and self-hatred as well as ignorance of their origins and family history . The NT Canon and the Creeds they got from Catholicism.
.Fundamentalist Protestants don't have a monopoly on bigotries and hubris, but they really do need to put the fun back in Fundamentalism.

very unchristian perspective for them to have. the only reason one would assume this would be that they don't know the truth about the catholic church. there are so many misconcpetions regarding the catholic faith a large deal stemming from protestant propaganda and large scale anti catholicism that is quite rampant in america. i heard a catholic convert from protestantism(an ex pastor who led half of his congregation to the catholic church)say that one of the ways he would convert people to protestantism was to tell them why not to be catholic. not what his church believed but simply be anything but catholic. here are some catholic sources as i am sure some of those misconceptions have found there way to this question
firstly and importantly the bible.

I think that many people won't 'be in heaven.' Not just some Roman Catholics, but protestants as well. It's a matter of trust and the relationship that is developed over time with God. Roman Catholics have various interests in applying faith in the wrong things; like Mary, angels, and saints. They do this willingly because they are taught to. But there is only one mediator between man and God, and that is Christ. Roman Catholics don't seem to value that in many cases. They do not equate prayer with worship, when it IS worship. So many Roman Catholics are repeatedly putting their trust in the saints and Mary, some never include Christ.

Actually, Catholics believe that faith AND works are what gets a person into heaven. Also, Catholics worship Christ and believe that he is the messiah, so the whole only worshipping the Jesus on the cross is also incorrect. When it comes to the saints, Catholics don't worship them, they use them as role models for their lives.

Protestant say that out of the fact that Catholics don't believe in being born-again. I'm Catholic and believe in being born-again. I believe in speaking in tongues and pray only to Jesus, yet I don't judge other Catholics.

It is said that very few people hate the Catholic faith.
But Millions hate what they THINK the Catholic Faith is.
The proof is above, so many that know little or nothing about the Catholic faith condemning us. I used to be just like them, until I studied the faith for myself and then liked it so much that I even joined.
Peace be with you!

Because most protestants have no real clue about what being Catholic is about.
I can undersand why non christians would think that Catholics go to hell, I'm cool with that. It's the fact, it's the bigotry from other christians I don't get.
In a word, ignorance.

The reason people believe this is because they have the idea that Catholics base salvation on works and Protestants base it on faith and only through faith can you get to Heaven.
