At least from my perspective.

I read all 23 answers before I choose my answer. I don't think that they want more people dependent on the government they just think the government can help more people. Unfortunately in today's society of everyone is equal rather than taking each case individually causes this. You have to treat everyone the same or someone might be upset, they might have their feelings hurt or God forbid be made to get a job and help support themselves and their families

Democrats on the whole want what Republicans want. To help Americans who want need help but to quit letting the deadbeats suck the system dry. Unfortunately they like the Republicans are allowing lobbyists, special interest groups and bubble world people to rule what most of American want rather the are Dems or Repubs. I bet 90% of americans want the same things the 5% in both parties that are so far left and so far right we can't understand their thoughts are ruling.

Interesting question. I'd like to tie it in with another thing though if I may. Both parties are guilty of growing government bigger then it should be. The leaders of the Democrat party today do lean tword a socialist ideology, even if they deny it. Example is even though the Bush tax cuts have helped the economy, the ones running for president are promising getting rid of the tax cuts asap. And folks contrary to what some say it will have an impact on all of us who pay taxes, not just the so called rich. Why? Because these new Democrats believe that higher taxes means more for them to redistribute as they see fit, they don't trust us to have too much of our own money. But the republicans are as much to blame for forgetting their conservative roots and getting behind bloated bureaucracies that waste more money then help what they were intended to do. What is interesting to me is seeing all the Americans saying no to the new amnisty bill and finally standing up to all politicians who in 1985 promised us border control with that amnisty bill and it never happened. We are simply saying fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. Now we are at a crossroads so to speak. It is clear that the majority of hard working tax paying law abiding citizens are against this bill. But president Bush and others are basically saying screw you we are going to pass this anyway. So are we finally seeing big government for who it is? I hope so. I don't advocate using any other means to change this government except by voting the "big government types" out and putting in those who know governments roll. Which is to work for us do what we want not what they want. They have too much power folks and our forefathers warned us about letting this happen. Give things like Education back to the states. We have to cut government down to size or pay the price of living under socialism which isn't far down the road.

Democrats measure a successful society by how many people are assured the rights & freedoms that the USA recognizes. Everyone should have equal rights.

That, my friend, apparently is a true statement.
One of the other posters said "everyone must have equal rights"..
Too late, everyone already has equal rights. What everyone does NOT have is equal money, which seems to be the goal of socialistic endeavors; to remove private property (which includes money) from the citizens and to invest all in a large governmental body.

It still will not work, but they keep on trying to convince those of us who can actually comprehend history otherwise.

No! We measure how successful society is by how many people we are able to help. I will admit that the current system we have allows people to mooch off of the government, but at the same time look who is in control of power.... THE REPUBLICANS.

No. I'm sure one great measure though is the sheer number of people who were able to move out of poverty and into the middle class with the great Democratic reforms starting with FDR. Now take a look at the right-wing record of ridiculous income gaps--Wall Streeters making at a minimum a\ $650K bonus, while our nations children die from lack of access to health care.

Partially yes, the other part (that's missing) is a false perception of "equality." I have three employees that work for me, only one is willing (or able) to lift the bigger and more heavy dogs (I own a dog grooming shop). But I'm expected to pay them all the same. And equal day's pay for an equal day's work? They (the dem.s) want to take from those who've worked to earn (privilege) and give it to those who have not. They're all about "leveling" the playing field when it's good for them. Capitalism doesn't work for them. AND *sigh* they're REALLY mean spirited, talking crap about the poor and those who live in double wides.

Not exactly. They measure their power/voter base by how many people are dependent on government for their needs.
