Atheists seem to be able to respond with humor to anything: religion, God, evil, their own death, pretty much anything you throw at them.

Christians seem to get real serious and refuse to laugh on so many subjects.

What does that tell us about the mental state of atheists vs that of Christians?

Apparently we aren't reading English the same way. I'm new but most of the postings by atheists I've seen are extremely rude and insulting, and as far as humor, well maybe if it's cruel or something...but basically they come across as having a real foul disposition. As to "Christians" - that oh so general term - if you're talking fundies I'll agree they are a dry lot,but when you do see anything genuinely funny it's usually from a kind of mainstream Christian. There don't seem to be a lot on this category, though,so I can see where you might reach negative conclusions about humor and Christianity,if you're taking fundies as your model for Christian. Actually they are a vocal minority - which I would think you'd know.

Indeed! As an atheist, I can't really get offended so I take everything in stride. Seems like everything you say about Christianity (or any other religion for that matter, Christians are just the most numerous) is offensive to someone. I just enjoy the world and take the time to laugh at people whenever i can ;)

It says that an atheist will be more likely to enjoy Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the book series) than a Christian.

What's the answer to the ultimate question of Live, the Universe and Everything? 42. What's the question? "What do you get if you multiply six by nine?" What does that demonstrate? That the universe is fundamentally c--ked up.

What is God's final word to His creation? "We apologise for the inconvenience."

It is because they truly don't care what they do or who they offend or why. Or at least that is what I believe.

It isn't because we are scared of life, only what we do in this life and how that leads us to the afterlife. Not everything is humorous. You have to be serious on subjects that need seriousness. I believe that athiests are not truly happy because they can't believe in hope beyond this or they are delusional only because they think that when they die, they just die and there is nothing else to it. However, I think differently because I don't want to go to hell and apparently some people would rather ignore the truth of it and fight with you on it than just accept that there are different beliefs and that there is something out there. Do you actually believe that there is nothing after this? Seriously? I don't think that evolution could have possibly created something so beautiful and detailed. I just can't ignore that there is something out there.

I'm a fearless Christian. Only a God with a sense of humor would have made man and placed a playground that close to a waste disposal site.

Because they can joke around pretty seriously, yet very humerous. The way they joke around is how they sometime don't care what others say in some ways. I have an atheist friend though I'm a Christian. That's really no problem to me.

I'm so tired of atheist and christians being stereotyped, humor has nothing to do with mental state, and I am a christian who has atheist friends! I don't try to convert them, and neither do they. Just becuase you believe something different doesn't mean you can't have fun.

Well, I'm not afraid that poking fun at stuff will land me in a fiery pit. Some Christians are funny, to be fair. The ones that aren't are just obsessed with getting into Heaven and are afraid that laughing at the wrong thing will offend their God.

Your answer is pretty much in the reading of it. I am agnostic, and I think I have a good sense of humor. I am not always wondering if what someone just said is OK BY THE BIBLE'S TEACHINGS. If I think it is funny, then I can laugh. No one or thing is looking over my shoulder.

Kind of goes hand in hand with my view of the Middle East. Fundamentalists of any religion tend to lack a sense of humor. This is a very dangerous phenomenon.
