Jst as an update, he's a little over a year old, and is in continous running mode, so i'm assuming he burns most of his calories from this. But he seems a bit small for a Border Collie.

Yes, he IS high energy, and does love to go after the hose and does bite at the water. I actually had to give him the hose he destroyed as a toy, just so I could keep the plants watered. He seems happiest when he's a wet, muddy stinky dog. He's not fixed yet, I am considering breeding him, thats why i was wondering about the weight question.

Around the 20kilo mark. Depends on the breeding. Some working stock, bred to work the hills, will not be so heavy...they are lighter boned.

PS. 50 - 65lbs??? These dogs couldn't do a day's work. Sorry, that is unrealistic.

You have added that your dog seems small.....typical stock from working lines, particularly hill stock, will be lighter and smaller. Heavy dogs can't cope with the terrain or the work-load.

To Suzy:- Why Hair loss?? In all my years of working and owning collies in obedience (and knowing others who have them) I have never seen this. Also, your dogs seem to be heavy?

Size, Proportion, Substance
The height at the withers varies from 19" to 22" for males, 18" to 21" for females. The body, from prosternum to point of buttocks, is slightly longer than the height at the withers with the length to height ratio being approximately 10:9. Bone must be strong, medium being correct but lighter bone is preferred over heavy. Overall balance between height, length, weight and bone is crucial and is more important than any absolute measurement. Dogs must be presented in hard working condition. Excess body weight is not to be mistaken for muscle or substance. Any single feature of size appearing out of proportion should be considered a fault.

Height: Dogs 19-22 inches (48-56 cm.) Bitches 18-21 inches (46-53 cm.)

Weight: Dogs 30-45 pounds (14-20 kg.) Bitches 27-42 pounds (12-19 kg.)

As yours is only a year old he's not full grown. I breed them and the activity they need is high doses. My male is coming 11 and still very active and weighs 56lbs in the winter and 50 in the summer. They burn energy very quickly. Watch for hair loss on the hind end as he gets older in the summers also. The hotter it gets in TX the more hair mine loose. The male will look like a baboon by August. LOL

If he isn't neutered yet, get him fixed. That will help with his energy level. NOT a lot but some. If he's not going to be used for breeding, no need for him to have his equipment. He'll be a better dog also.

Have fun with him, they are great dogs and the smartest. Have you played with the hose yet? They LOVE water! He'll either chase the water or jump for it. If he jumps, watch your hand. HAHAHAHAHA, you'll find out why.

A fully grown border collie will weigh 45 and up I've seen males get to be upwards of 75lbs. They are a medium sized breed.

Male border collies typically weigh anywhere from 35-45 pounds at maturity. The smallest male I have met was 33 pounds and the largest male was close to 50 (he needed to loose a little weight!!).

Nellana! You are SO right! Clearly my brain wasn't with me on this question!!!! Thanks bunches!
