We live in a duplex home ~ (2 houses that are side by side and connected). We don't have a landlord (some people think we do for some reason?) We own our house. Anyway.. the people in the next house make noise sometimes all day ~ I can hear music sometimes, I can hear them walking around, and the worst is the pounding/banging noises we hear sometimes. I have decided it sounds like either a door slamming really REALLY hard or a kid is jumping off his bed.. constantly! Or maybe even somebody being slammed against the wall (we have also heard yelling sometimes too) It shakes our house - I'm not lying.. it's that bad.. sometimes we are watching TV and suddenly.. BANG! and our house shakes. Then it will happen again.. for like up to 10 minutes with 3-5 minutes of silence in between. Oh, now it has been happening around 4:30 in the morning!! My boyfriend doesn't want us to go over and talk to them about it. It's getting very annoying. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!

A couple more things..
1) my boyfriend is afraid that we would make them mad if we say anything to them (which drives me crazy!)
2) I want to move.. I tell my boyfriend "let's move!" all the time. he says no, because we don't have the money. he is hoping they will move. But I don't think they will because they just moved in maybe 1-2 years ago.
3) if we were ever to go over there at the time they were making the noise, there is a chance that they could have their fence locked. *sigh* they have a fence just before their front door, so if the fence is locked - we can't do anything.
4) I have pounded back before and that shut them up for awhile.. they always come back though.. *sigh*
You all have great suggestions! Thanks!!

if they have children call child protective services and tell them you are afraid for the childrens' lives. tell them you may be overreacting, but you would feel better if they checked it out.
if the man works all day and the noise is going on when only the wife is home then ask him if his wife is having an affair because you hear pounding on the wall and screaming durring the day.
if it happens only when the 2 are home together ask if they can keep the 'happy noises' down (pull the bed away from the wall, please). if it doesn't stop then call the police and say you think the couple next door are going to kill each other.
you could also get an airhorn and blow it when you hear any noise at all.

I would go over when it happens and ask if they are alright. Tell them you heard and horrible bang and worried that someone fell and was injured. Be polite and act dumb.
If you do this a few times, they'll get the message.
Our next door neighbors used to make a horrible noise like they were throwing something down the stairs. It probably was the kids throwing something down the stairs. I went to them 2 times and asked if they were OK, because I heard someone fall down the stairs, and they haven't done it in a couple months.
If it continues, you should call the police and tell them your think someone is getting slammed against the wall.

I live in an apartment and had the same problem. I decided to go about this in a proactive manner. I got to know the guys that live above me. One of them is now a good friend of mine and he's really a good guy. His roommate is the one that is loud. Sometimes we hear them walking because they are in the military and have combat boots on when they come in. We didn't know that. Sometimes sound carries more than people realize it. We know them now and have gone up and asked them to keep it down and it's not a problem. If you think something is wrong like if you hear yelling and fighting, you may want to call the police and tell them to check it out. See if you can get to know the people and see if you can talk about it. Just like the guys above me, they didn't realize they were being loud and we didn't realize they were military guys with some pretty heavy boots.

The simplest way would be just to talk to the neighbors, the adults, not the children. Tell them you hear lots of banging and it's disturbing. They may think the walls are sound-proof, especially if your family is quiet, they never hear anything on their side. Since you own your home you may be able to add sound-dampening material.
If they refuse to cooperate then you should call the police.
Edit. If the fence is locked you could use the phone and call them.

Check the noise ordinance for your town - most towns it's anything before 9 am or after 10 pm. If you hear it during those hours, call the police. Otherwise, speak to your neighbor reasonably and explain you're concerned about the unusual noise. If they get nasty with you, speak to a lawyer.

move! If that's not an answer you want to hear than you better say something to them politely, of course. keep the guys out you know how defensive men can get. just talk to the woman. ask her if she ever hears you guys at all and apologize if she does. complain about the walls being so thin. naturally she will ask if you hear them and go from there. good luck

First, speak to your neighbor about their noise. They may not be aware of it. If that doesn't help, call the police. You may have to do it a few times, but eventually they will stop.
I had neighbors that would swim in their pool about 2am and play 'marco polo', I called the police so often that when they saw my lights go on they knew it was time to get out.
Good luck

everyone can ask for an inspection, the fireplace branch does look at company's frequently so that you basically might want to invite them to placed them on the list. i don't think of they want a consent because this construction has tenants and firemen might want to might want to make confident they knew the position each and every of the exits were anyhow.. they don't often condemn property they make a itemizing of what needs to be corrected then if that could no longer executed in a lifelike era of time then it would want to might want to be abandoned.

Yes, make a report to the police and tell them of your concern. It is also called disturbing the peace. I live in a Duplex and have to realize that that is where I chose to live, knowing about all the +'s and -'s of this kind of living arrangement. But they still need to respect you.

i live in an apartment.. and when the people get too loud at an outrageous hour, i call the police... disturbing the peace...
call as many times as you need to...
you can also remain anonymous.. just tell them the address of the people that are bothering you.
