I joined the gym two months ago and haven't seen much in the way of results, I do lots of cardio and I can't seem to find an intelligent person that works there to help me figure out what weight machines I should use and how much weight, sets, reps, etc. Any suggestions.

Try the famous 3 day split that tons of guys across the world use. Example :

Mon - Back / Biceps
Wed- Legs / Shoulders
Fri - Chest / Triceps

Abs can be done on all of the above days. I use this classic split right here and I like to choose about 4 exercises for each muscle. For example on Mondays I do 4 different back exercises. I do Rows, Pull downs, Pull ups, and Dead Lifts. For each exercise I do a few sets. Here is an example of my Monday.

Back
Rows 3 sets x 10 reps
Pull Downs 3 sets x 10 reps
Pull ups 4 sets x 5 reps
Dead Lifts 5 sets x 5 reps

Like someone else already wrote everyone is different but I'll be the first to tell you that nothing is better than free weights. The balance of holding them, the coordination of using them, and just the weight against your muscle is flawless. Good Luck!

Best bet is to do it on your own. Watch to see how the different machines work; then lift as much as you comfortably can and try to keep increasing it. Do pushups, chinups, situps, all the old routine exercises. If you can run, run 3 - 4 miles every day. If you can't walk, try to walk at least 5 miles a day. Check your diet to see if it fits in with www.mypyramid.com. Don't smoke, don't drink, don't do drugs, get a good nights sleep.
Try to be out of doors at least 2 hours a day.
But, simply, do as much as you can for as long as you can; you will see results (unless you are too old; some people will tell you that age doesn't make a difference, but it deffinitely does!)

strength training and nutrition is all about research, trial and error...get yourself a journal and get to work. Unfortunately what works for one doesnt for another. Good luck.
