We have 3 kids under 5. We have done some of the big name vacation the past few years. We are planning on going some where again before the year is out but want find someplace with out an adult sized taking mouse, 50 ft water slides and 200 people every 10ft. All we can think of are the places you see the ads for on TV every summer and those are just the kinds of places we are trying to avoid this time. Anyone know of a slow paced enjoyable family ( with you kids) vacation spot that is not so commercial.

Do they like dinosaurs? In Ogden, Utah they have the Eccles Dinosaur Park. It is a collection of prehistoric creatures. More than one hundred dinosaur sculptures fill the park. These realistic, full-sized sculptures are based on actual fossil skeletons, and are brought to life by robotics, artistic details, and a state-of-the-art sound system. It is like your very own Jurassic Park. Then you can go to the Museum of Natural History and see the real dinosaur fossils. They have full-size fossilized dinosaurs and it is about a twenty minute drive from Eccles. Another twenty minute drive would get you to Thanksgiving Point. They have a a dinosaur museum as well. You can watch a dinosaur movie in 3D, visit the petting zoo, and discover the gardens. I live here and my children love all three of these sights. You can do one a day. This trip was recently featured in Family Fun magazine. The children loved it.

I would get a cabin in the mountains, by a lake for swimming, fishing, campfires, boating, etc. Kids that age can have a lot of fun, although as I type it sounds kind of dangerous. But we did it growing up and lived through it. Depending on what part of the country you are in, but hopefully there is someplace within driving distance of where you live. Could be Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New England, Rockies, etc. Even KOA's have "camping cabins" where you live in a little cabin and otherwise rough it. It may be late to make reservations, but if you spend some time researching locations hopefully you could find something.

Also, the last week of July is the BEST 4-H county fair ever in Goshen, Indiana. It lasts all week, has TONS of fun things to do, is very wholesome and kid-friendly, and you can do the Amish tour activities the other days. There is a hotel there with a big indoor pool you can stay at. If the kids like animals, they can visit the rabbits, sheep, horses, llamas, goats, etc., carnival rides, lots of food.

Camping is what we did. I live in the Pacific Northwest so there are tons of places to camp. Rent a cabin somewhere. You didn't say where you lived so it's hard to say exactly what you could do.
All 3 of my girls loved camping. We used Thousand Trails a lot. You can get a free weekend with them. Of course they want you to purchase a membership but you do not have to.
Sometimes the water parks and theme parks are just too busy to have fun as a family. I prefer a nice quiet place where we can enjoy each other.

Try the Smoky Mountains in TN. There is plenty to do without having to go to Dollywood or being around all those people. We are going at the end of the summer and we have 3 kids under the age of 7.

I suggest Arbuckle Wilderness, a drive-through animal reserve, where you can feed the animals from the car. South of there is a swimming area, which I have never been to, but heard it is fun.

Mackinac (mackinaw) Island Michigan... it doesn't get any slower paced then that, no motorized vehicles, only horse and buggy, bikes or your feet! The grand hotel is this most beautiful summer resort you will ever see and they have children's activities everyday, but there are many other hotels, inns, and bed and breakfasts on the island.
