CRUISE: I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist I never agreed with psychiatry. And when i started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn't believe in psychology.
TOM CRUISE: Matt, you have to understand this. Here we are today where I talk out against drugs and psychiatric abuses of electric shocking people, okay, against their will, of drugging children with them not knowing the effects of these drugs. Do you know what Aderol is? Do you know Ritalin? Do you know now that Ritalin is a street drug? Do you understand that?
TOM CRUISE: No, you see. Here's the problem. You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do.
TOM CRUISE: All it does is mask the problem, Matt. And if you understand the history of it, it masks the problem. That's what it does. That's all it does. You're not getting to the reason why. There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance.
What do you think? Are the 'drugs' just bologna?

No way. He's been brainwashed by Scientology propaganda.
At http://thehealthcenter.info you can find this explanation of "a chemical imbalance":
What is a Chemical Imbalance?
A person’s brain is a network of billions of nerve cells called neurons which communicate with one another to create cognitive [thought], affective [emotional] and behavioral responses. This process would not be possible without neurotransmitters, naturally occurring chemicals in the brain that are the key to cell-to-cell communication. Since this process is normally perfectly fine-tuned, any dysregulation may lead to changes in thinking, moods and your ability to function.
The term chemical imbalance is commonly used to define an irregularity that may exist in the production, absorption or reabsorption (reuptake) of neurotransmitters like Serotonin, Norepinephrine, Dopamine and GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric Acid). However, recent studies completed during the last decade indicate that the definition of a chemical imbalance should also encompass a variety of other natural chemicals, including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids which are essential to neurotransmitter synthesis.
According to the National Institue of Mental Health, chemical imbalances have been implicated in an array of emotional disturbances, like anxiety, panic attacks, depression and ADHD.

Tom Cruise is completely coocoo bananas..
No short term use of psychotropic drugs can be very helpful...
I was on psychotropic drugs for 6 months after the birth of my 3rd child due to sever post partum depression.. It was bad.. I remember sitting at dinner one night my husband said "Would you please pass the salt." to which I replied "The food I cook isn't good enough." I slammmed my fist down on the table catching the edge of my plate sending it spinning up raining food across the dinningroom then screamed "Fine if you don't like my cooking we can get divorced." I then ran into the bathroom and slammed the door and cried for 3 hours.. Had suicidal thoughts and pretty well have a complete mental breakdown...
My poor husband , he was so lost, confused and completely blindsided, just before he asked for the salt we were laughing and joking, we had been married less than a year and in that time we had a child and I went coocoo bananas..
After a visit to the dr and a series of tests it was determined I had a severe chemical imbalance as well as a severe hormonal imbalance.. With a 6 month series of hormones and psycotropic drugs I found my balance again and am now just baseline coocoo bananas instead of over the top have a breakdown over passing the salt at dinner bananas....
I can agree with blanket prescribing of psychotropic drugs being wrong which is what Lisa Marie Presley (also a scientologist) advocates against.. However with proper testing and diagnosis psychotropic drugs can be a huge help...

Drugs for Psychiatry do work or I would not be here now. I take a depression/Anxiety medicine Lexapro and its has really helped me. My mother commited suicide and thats the reason I was/am depressed. I feel like I am seeing a BIG difference in my attitude due to the pills. I never thought I would ever need that medicine either, but always expect the unexpected is what I have learned. They should not be abused though. People that take these drugs dont do it for the high becuase you really cant tell a difference it gradually makes you better over months/weeks.

Drugs are fun... but the kind that Tommyboy is blabbing about are the kind prescribed by teachers to treat students who learn differently from the way the teacher was taught to teach. Here's my take-
I think he's on to something when saying that psychology is incorrect with its "imbalance" ideas, as we are each individuals. Some traits will cause us to have defects- seeing things that aren't there, hyperactivity, inability to concentrate, psychosis... but that doesn't mean that chemical imbalances are made up. That means that a norm or a standard was set, and that people who do not fit this description fall under that category.
It goes along with the whole reason drugs make you high. Yes ritalin is a street drug. Yes aderol is a street drug. Yes cocaine is a street drug... but they're used in the medical field, so they CAN be used in a pharmaceutical situation. Its the difference between USING and ABUSING a drug. People who say that drugs like ritalin and aderal are useless to society have never stopped to think that those drugs (cocaine aside, as that is used as an anesthetic) also work on schizophrenics, people with asthma, people with depression, people with hyperactive disorder, people who want to quit smoking.... you can't just say that there is no such thing as chemical imbalance. Its flat out not true. YOU CAN however say that teachers and quack doctors with phd's should not be handing them out like penny candy.
edit: what ZERO COOL said sounds better than mine

Depression runs in my family. Out of 8 kids, 6 have been diagnosed with it. I went through a period of it. Counceling didn't help at all. The only thing that helped me feel better was medication. I was on Paxil for about 14-15 months and was able, under the care of a psychiatrist, to wean off of them. I am no longer taking medication and I am not depressed, but I am very grateful for the people that have developed those medications. Chemical imbalances are very real.

Tom Cruise is an idiot. Not only is there such a thing as a chemical imbalance, it is also hereditary. My mom had a chemical imbalance that she had to get treated, and so do I. But I do agree that there are other things that can help it and therapy and medication is not always necessary. But it is a real thing. My friend is bipolar, it is very real.
also, they are prescribing ADHD drugs now to obese children because it helps them lose weight (which makes sense, my cousin was skinny as a beanpole while he was on Ritalin and when he came off of it, he really chunkied up).

Much of what he says is true, the brain is physical and it is in various states much of which are little understood. Psychs percieve various phenomena and they can play with it and dope you up on all manner of things to achieve various results. But they're toying with things they little understand and some argue do more harm than good.
The history of psychology is a freak show of torture and abuse of the mentally ill. Still we continue. If you've ever sat in on a psych class to listn to some bitter old woman talk about the mentally ill it becomes apparent that they have no undestanding or compassion for what is really happening. Many drugs are the mental equivalent of tying you up in the corner so you don't bother us.
ADD did not come out of nowhere, the world has always been here, popping a generation on focusin, maybe you'll make a group of super soldiers, maybe you'll just mess people up like so many people did in the past.
I don't trust shrinks, another thing is the psychological industrial complex. Thier incentive to diagnose by making money off what they find. I'll let you chew on that, and i'm sure you'll think i'm crazy because. a) you don't understand or b) you already know what you believe.
Cruise went of the deep end and got a little excited and i'm sure being mixed up in scientology doesn't help, but look at the world all mixed up in christianity. He's more indicitive of the apocrathy than the exception.

Tom Cruise is entitled to believe what he wants, but I believe he was wrong to say what he said. He is not a doctor and he is only speaking from his knowledge of his faith.
For Tom to say that is like a Christian saying all gay people are going to hell. The Christian isn't God, so how would the Christian know that as a fact. The Christian is just speaking from what he or she has been taught by other men and women.

I agree w/ ZC in saying he has been brain washed, but the stuff he says about psychology( I have a degree in Psychology(Bachelor's)) is pretty true. Ritalin is a street drug because I have bought it on the street(they call it Kiddie Crack). Many drugs because of PSY have helped create a new dependency on these drugs. They throw drugs at what ever problems a person faces instead of talking through problems instead. Drugs really aren't nessacery and Cruise is right by saying they are masking problems with drugs
He may be crazy himself but he has a good point.

NO I dont'. But then I don't listen to ACTORS on psychiatric stuff. I'm sure Tom Cruise believes there is no such thing as autism, or anything else that his handlers don't believe in.
