I was in Iraq and I was very sad to see the poverty the people live in. I shed tears for the innocent children who were in the middle of our selfishness and our disregard for life.
To this day I don't even know if it was right to invade Iraq or if we should have left it alone. But I can tell you that I saw first hand how grateful some Iraqis feel towards Americans.
When they begged me for a bottle of water my heart broke. Many people might disagree with the war and I disagree with it too but the innocent people needed help. They need to be freed from the iron hand of Sadamm.
Maybe it was none of our business to help them because many civilian/soldiers lives are/were in jeopardy but please don’t feel the war is completely in vain.

When I talk about selfishness and disregard for life I refer to the war in general not in a particular group. War in general is selfish and war has no regard for life. We have to kill in order to survive and that leaves us no choice but to disreard life

Thank you. Someone finally stepped up and said what most of us felt about going to war. War is bad all the time however sometimes out of it comes good things. Civilians don't see what we saw: Iraqis talking with us, just bsing, and how they are happy to be able to think on their own without fear. Saddam needed to be out, we should have done that a long time ago. We may not be the "watchdogs"of the world but this is one thing I think we should have done. What went wrong was in not closing off the borders and the rifts between the Sunnis and Shiites. They take it alittle further than just political and religious groups. People here take what they have for granted sometimes I think and get too comfortable and greedy for their own good.

Nobody should ever be ashamed to help out others in need.
No matter where they live in the world. Whats wrong with helping people try to obtain freedom???????? YES, even if you have to die for it. To help another person is so very righteous and good. Helping others out of a bad situation to better there lives, when's the last time you heard that to be a bad thing. God Bless You and every person that believes this is true. And thank you for being a soldier. MLJ

If the Iraqis would get their act together, and try to make something of their country, they would get all kinds of help from America. Instead the different factions are jockying around to get their mullah in Saddams place, killing each other and thousands of innocents in the meantime.
Of course, it's the population that's supporting those who are doing the killing. No Shiite wants another Sunni in power. No Sunni wants to kow-tow to a Shiite, so the killing goes on, and on, and on.

You talk about the innocent children and how things made you feel , my heart goes out to u my son is in the army as well he tells me stories about how they train the children to kill as well. I have to say thank you again and again for what you have done for all of us. When i lay down at night i not only pray for my son but for you as well. For every one of you soldiers you will all see through your eyes what you see and no one knows what that is but you. May God bless you all for the strong you ARE and the heart you have

I really didn't like how you said "our selfishness and our disregard for life". Maybe I took that out of context but I completely disagree with it.
Your other points, though, are wonderful.

I don't feel it was in vain. My son spent two years there and like you felt compassin for the Iraqi people. He also felt and still feels strongly, cause he's going back for his 5th and 6th combat tour, that we are there for the right reasons and are helping! He has been there in every calendar year since this start back in 2003 and he says the differenece there is like night and day! Thanks for your service!

Glad to hear your side. Thank you for serving. Keep telling your story and maybe you can sway the public to back the military and our government in there decisions, weather we think they are good or bad.

that was a very moving statement. i feel that we should send in the Humane Society, but the government feel that there is too much of a threat for them. Bush should start pulling troops out. not all at once but quickly and efficiently.
my aunt was just shipped out, and i fear for her safety.

thank you for your service. while I don't agree with our reasons for going to Iraq, and never did, I do believe that as a nation we need to complete what we have begun.
