I just heard on the news the other day that they are taking four to six months due to the new requirement that you have one for either Canada or Mexico. In the past this was not required. The news reporter stated that they are considering dropping this newly enacted requirement due to situations exactly like yours.

There is a big delay on passports - particularly to Canada and Mexico. If your passport is processing, that's good - but does not guarantee anything.

If you are going to Canada or Mexico, or most Caribbean countries, you can go to the State Department's site and print off proof of having applied for the passport, and this will get you in, with a valid government issued photo ID.

If you are going somewhere else, then it's not quite as simple.

If you are more than 14 days from your departure date (which you certainly are right now for any date in July) you have to wait for now. 14 days before your departure, you can contact the National Passport Information Center ( Telephone Number: 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778))
Expect to wait a long time on the line. But eventually you will be able to get this resolved.

Note the web site is currently saying that this needs to happen 10 days ahead, but I'd try calling 14 calendar days ahead.

Unfortunately if you don't get your passport you will not be going to Japan. The leniency only applies to Canada, Mexico and Caribbean.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced June 7, 2007 that U.S. Citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda who have applied for but not yet received passports can nevertheless temporarily enter and depart from the United States by air with a government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through September 30, 2007. The federal government is making this accommodation for air travel due to longer than expected processing times for passport applications in the face of record-breaking demand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I hope you purchased travel insurance and even if you did it is possible that they won't cover the losses you will incur if your passport doesn't arrive. Reason being they have discussed this new change (Japan always needing one - but for the rest of the world) for a few years now and to many people just waited last minute and it's causing this extreme backup. Not that this is your fault, it's just this is what it is and even if the Government Center said you will have it in 4 weeks, that is never guaranteed unfortunately.

Expedited pasports are supposed to take about 4 weeks, but I am sure even the expedited ones are taking longer now. NO one on answers can answer your questions! Only sympathize with you. You can go to the website below ( if you have not already done so) to get info to check on your passport. Good Luck.

As you should have read in the papers, the agency is overwhelmed with applications because of the new requirement to have one for cruises and Canada and Mexico which has been set set aside for the summer.
Are you sure you need it?

Contact your congressman and explain the situation. They can intervene on your behalf. My husband and I applied June 4th and got ours June 14th, expedited.
