I don't know either where you would get the TOTAL ISLANDS answer you want but would think there is a NZ gov site which would help you. I doubt if the Cook Islands are considered as being NZ, I know they are a dependancy of NZ but sovreignty is not NZ's. If you are going to count every small island off the main 3 islands then there would be thousands, one area known as the Bay of Islands has more than 100. And then there are the Aucklands, Chathams, etc.
You could try this link .......

Good luck.

65 - that is 2 main islands and 63 others. Waiheke Island has the 3rd largest population after the NI and then the SI. Third largest island, in size, is Stewart Island.

There are other islands (at least 50) that do not form part of New Zealand, but which are either administered by New Zealand or are politically dependent on New Zealand. These include, but are not limited to, Kermadec Islands, Auckland Islands, Chatham Islands, Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau.

This is a difficult one, because we generally refer to only 3-4, i.e., North Island, South Island, and Chatham Island. But you're right, there are many more that make up NZ.
