I just got back. It is expensive but the Double Tree in Times Square.

I stayed at the St James Hotel last year.. room and bathroom were clean n' nice. Was 155 bucks.
They have rooms with 2 double beds, so four can sleep in one room...split that 4 ways and its a cheap stay.
Its on 45th St and Brdwy, right by times square.
Theres a deli next door if ya want coffee in the morning.

why stay in Times Square and get ripped off?
Trust me, venture out anywhere else and you will find the prices decrease. Midtown(where tourists and times square are) has priced jacked up for that exact reason.
NYC has the best transportation for tourists, yet you all are afraid to leave that little cash trap. Trust me, venture out, you will find more.
use some of those websites that help you find hotel locations. save your money on the hotel and spend it on all the many things to do here, trust me, manhattan is expensive.

Best Western (times Sq), very nice and they have good deals, I always stay there when I go and definitely recommend it.
