My parents don't like him and they're trying to tell me they can put him in jail. He's 6 months older than me. Is this illegal in anyway?

No, they can't put him in jail for this. I'm sure they'd like to, but you're both under 18. In most states, even when he turns 18 there will be nothing they can do, because you'll only be a half a year younger, but you might want to check to make sure. All states are not the same. All that said, they STILL can't do anything about it unless they prove you are having sex. It is not illegal to date, just to have sex if someone is legally an adult and someone else is legally a child. Just in case, however, you could call your local police station and ask them to make sure.

All that said, why don't your parents like him? Think about it really carefully. They may well be looking after your best interests.

NO!! im sorry but your parents aren't right!! they can't put him in jail!! if he would be 18 or older then it would be illegal!! Listen to your parents and ask them what is the real reason they don't like him!! i think that you could totally date him!! GO FOR IT!!

I highly doubt it's illegal, because he is still a minor himself. But check with your state to be sure.

I'd ask yourself why your parents don't like him...does he have a bad reputation or something? Or do they just not want to see you going out with him?

I'm almost 99% positive it isn't illegal, but if your parents have such a problem with it, maybe you should wait the six months and then go out with him - it would make things easier. Good luck!

NO! it is illegal when (A) one person is older than sixteen and the other is younger. and (b) one person is older than 18 and the other is younger. that is if your having sex, though. but your 16 and ur guy is 17, shouldnt be a problem!

Unless there is some strange law where you live then no. As for as I know 16 is the legal age of consent in most states

It's not until he's 18 and you are not.

Well for now you can date him.
But the minute he turns 18 your parents can put him in jail for sexual assault if your still dating him.

I don't know... it depends on the laws in your state. But if you like him that much... wait 6 months until you are 17 and they can't do anything.
