When a man or a woman who is married, has sexual relations with a person to whom he /she is not married.

It doesn't even have to be sexual, it's a betrayal of the wedding vows.

Adultery:

conjugal infidelity. An adulterer was a man who had illicit intercourse with a married or a betrothed woman, and such a woman was an adulteress. Intercourse between a married man and an unmarried woman was fornication. Adultery was regarded as a great social wrong, as well as a great sin. The Mosaic law (Num. 5:11-31) prescribed that the suspected wife should be tried by the ordeal of the "water of jealousy." There is, however, no recorded instance of the application of this law. In subsequent times the Rabbis made various regulations with the view of discovering the guilty party, and of bringing about a divorce. It has been inferred from John 8:1-11 that this sin became very common during the age preceding the destruction of Jerusalem. Idolatry, covetousness, and apostasy are spoken of as adultery spiritually (Jer. 3:6, 8, 9; Ezek. 16:32; Hos. 1:2:3; Rev. 2:22). An apostate church is an adulteress (Isa. 1:21; Ezek. 23:4, 7, 37), and the Jews are styled "an adulterous generation" (Matt. 12:39). (Comp. Rev. 12.)

Adultery is a sin of the holy torah that is a sexual act with a married woman...in order for the act to be true adultery a married woman must be involved....a man is not required by the teachings of the holy torah to be monogomous in a marriage relationship but he is required to honor his sexual mate with marriage or status as a female servant or concubine..this teaching does not fly with christianity or western culture very well...but this is the true meaning of adultery....a better source of info would be a hebrew dictionary you will also find that the word means to turn aside to a strange man or take lodging with a strange man......this is true adultery...although a man lying to his wife and being unfaithful to his word to be with only her..is also a sin..and punishable ..as a liar and a deciever....but if a married man sleeps with an unmarried woman...the woman has not commited adultery..and is not guilty of anything except loosing her virtue at the very worst...unless the man decieved her into believing that they would have a relationship that was honored by the same law that defines adultery.....

1 Corinthians 6:18 commands us to flee from fornication. Just what does that mean? The Greek word translated “fornication” (porneia) is not restricted to sexual intercourse but includes a variety of sexual acts. So if two people engage in oral sex or in fondling each others’ reproductive organs, they are guilty of fornication.

If either of those two people is married to another, that person is guilty of adultery. You can commit fornication without committing adultery. But you cannot commit adultery without committing fornication. Fornication focuses on the act. Adultery is the result. Adultery is fornication by a married person.

Commonly, adultery is when a married person has sex or at least too much interest in another. This is bad because it threatens to break up a marriage.

Adultery can also be defined as when a married person breaks their vows of "forsaking all others". That means that not only sexually, but emotionally and functionally as well, a married person puts the one they are married to first and foremost, and does not allow interference.

Fornication between those married to another.
In other words, a person married to one person having sex with another person is committing adultery.

Fornication is sexual immorality of different ways.

But it seems adultery is the highest form of fornication, because of the great damage it does.

People that enter into a marriage, a sexual union, are bound to each other until death. Adultery is getting inbetween the two.

Any sexual conduct outside of your marriage. The act of breaking the vow of "forsaking all others" usually implies you would be seeking sexual relations with another outside of your marriage.

This is what was basically stated in the Mosaic law, Jesus took it a step further by telling us "if we were to lust after another (to think about the act of sex with another) in one heart then it is as if you actually committed the act"

That's my understanding of adultery.

Voluntary sexual intercourse, or/and sexual act between man and someone other than his wife or between married woman and other than her husband.

Biblically even thought of that kind of act is adultery.
