I heard supper used to mean dinner while dinner meant lunch.
I always thought supper was the big dinner

I use supper as the last meal of the day and I'm from New York. Also, by the way, dinner doesn't mean the last meal--it means the most important meal of the day. To some, lunch is dinner.

I'm a southern girl and we say dinner instead of lunch and supper as the evening meal.

To me supper is dinner but my mother in law which is 84 calls dinner lunch.

To me they are interchangeable though both mean the evening meal. My grandmother considered the noon meal 'dinner', especially on Sunday, and the evening meal was always 'supper'. For me, 'dinner' is a more elaborate evening meal than 'supper'.

Where I live (in NW Ohio) supper means dinner.
I lived in Southern Indiana for a while and there, dinner means lunch and supper means dinner.

I grew up in San Jose, California. Supper was a fourth meal we might have on the weekends. It usually was small like muffins and cocoa.
I read the Laura Ingalls Wilder "Little House on the Prairie" books and they called their dinner meal 'supper'.
