As the others have said, it's a sigma. In mathematics, especially calculus, it's used to notate sums.

If you are speaking of the tool at the top of Excel its function is to provide a total for the cells above the current cell or if on a row, it sums the cells to the left. It is called AutoSum. For example; enter 1 in cell A1 and 1 in cell b1 and then select cell a3 and click the Sigma symbol and the number 2 will appear in that cell.

In excel this is known as the Autosum. It will automatically add up selected cells. Saves using a calculator. Very useful tool. The offical name is THE AUTOSUM FUNCTION.
