I've seen a couple of people that have a Dr. connected to their name on here, and I'm wondering why because Faith is a personal gift from God and one can not have a doctorate degree that is recognized by every faith as far as theology goes so why do they put it in here? Pride?

I appreciate the Drs. but, I noticed , for the most part, they do not list the Dr. as part of their name, so the few that do I am thinking if it makes no difference here, why do it at all other than wanting people to ooooh, and ahhhh, at an intelligence that doesn't mean anything when it comes to God.

to Evolver: yes, for a Catholic. You cannot be sure though that that person has a Dr. in Catholic theology

Credentialism.
Times have changed quite a bit. All the Apostles had to do was be called, walk with Christ on Earth, be Christian.
The idea was that the Pastors would teach others that would also be called, perpetuating the teachings, etc.
But, now we've got seminaries, most are now liberal, and without actual MONEY, you can't get the education you need unless you are rich!
Some would say that if God called you, He would provide the money needed. That, is without a doubt, total malarky. A big crock.
So, what they are trying to get you to believe is that God cannot or will not use a man unless they get through their school, and if God doesn't give you the cash, you must not be called. Right?
I guess you can tell I have a problem with the way things are done.
It's just that I have met a number of people that were called, and the doors were slammed shut on them by people that want money.
After my name I sometimes will write DmA.
Doesn't mean Anything. Just to make a point.

A doctorate in theology might give the person knowledge without him or her actually being wise. That kind of education doesn't make a person's faith somehow greater or better than someone without that education.
Does it mean anything on this site? Sometimes when I read detailed answers that include a lot of facts or explainations of a particular religion's teachings, I will check the person's profile to see if they mention any specialties. I think a profile is the perfect place to put that kind of information, if one wishes to share it.

If a person picks my answer over one from FatherK - then they wanted the wrong answer.
"Does having a doctorate degree in anything mean anything on this site?" - It does to me, but I understand what your saying as many people are vastly gifted over an educated person, and will have the insight to help. But...for all the human related laws, customs, and day to day worldly stuff to make it through the week...
A person needs real information about a subject - a person that learned the subject in ALL it's aspects is the person to search for.
Like climbing those mountains to talk to enlightened gurus - search the best store of knowledge.
If you want something just for a laugh then go to a comedian, not usually a chef or NBA guard.
If you need to know how to cook something - do not go to a comedian, go to a chef.
If you want to teach your children how to play basketball - go to the NBA pro, not the comedian or chef.
And in all 3 cases the best have put in the time to be the best, by studying, and experience.
I lived with ship board lawyers, and believe me - they knew nothing, except how to stay in trouble.
I expect my son to seek out the best people to help him grow, and learn, and that usually means university graduates. But I also hope he finds gifted people that will explain deeper important things to him, regardless of who they are.

For one thing, I think that Dr H Lector probably doesn't actually have a doctorate. I think it's just a screen name.
Doctorate degrees in science don't have to be recognized by your faith to be valid - they work anyway. And most people claiming a doctorate will not have one in theology.
Actually, intelligence means quite a bit when it comes to god - studies have shown that the more education you have, the less likely you are to believe in a god. So there you go. Intelligence tells you that there isn't a god.

All having a doctorate degree means is someone had the money, time and wherewithal to spend eight years in school. Aside from MDs, DVMs, clinical psychologists, and a few others, I fail to see the purpose. It reminds me of the old joke, about the degree progression through college: BS (Bullsh*t), MS (More Sh*t) and PhD (Piled high and Deep). The few people I know who have doctorate degrees play a great game of Trivial Pursuit.
(And, just for the record, I went to college, too)
I also seriously doubt any of the gods notice, either.

You can pay for college through scholarships and grants if you qualify. Google AXA achievement scholarship and plan to qualify. You will also qualify for other scholarships if you line yourself up with this one. Every dollar you earn you should save 50 % for college and don't touch it. Apply to more than just Penn and compare financial aid packages. Attend the college that give you the most scholarships and grants. Take out the minimum in loans. Continue to do community service at the college level and become a leader of a club. Connect with your department professors in your major and volunteer or do an internship. In the mean time get onto college board and practice you SAT/ACT with daily questions. Do a rigorous schedule every year and you will be able to qualify for merit scholarships. Start looking for your colleges now and look up the requirements. Very good to be thinking of this now!!

A doctorate in theology would certainly mean something for a Catholic. As Catholics, we do recognize that some people are implicitly better trained in interpreting religious scriptures and writings than laypeople are.
Of course anyone can slap a "Dr." on their profile, and it needn't mean anything. There was that infamous incident of a Wikipedia expert in theology who was in fact nothing of the sort.

If having a doctorate, or any other degree meant anything relative to our salvation, God would be a respector of persons, which He is not. Some people use their degrees to impress the world, which is prideful. Others use them to gain knowledge in a particular field of work.

maybe because it shows that even though they have a Dr. in one faith... its considerate that they have studied and know a lot about that one faith so if anyone has questions refering to that one faith then they will know that person has spent a lot of time in that one subject. =)
plus all the schooling they have to go through why not show it? It shows your more reliable, when your sick do you to to a doctor or go to someone who thinks they know a lot about medicine?
