So many people in America and in this forum are misguided. They have way too much pride in America. They think that invading a country that posed no threat to us (Iraq, in other words) was a good thing. They have no idea of what is actually going on overseas and have no intention of ever informing themselves of that. They see nothing but idealism in their lives, and too much of it at that. They are ignorant creatures who think that freedom is actually achievable, when in reality, social mores and folkways prevent humans from ever being totally free to do whatever they want.

It is sad. One really needs to travel to really see that there are other ways of thinking and being in the world that can enrich our lives. There are alot of things that America can improve on. It's sad to hear people say the same lame superficial thing "America's the greatest nation on earth" and "love it or leave it" mentality. With that attitude they assume that we can't be better or can't improve, when in fact, we could improve on alot of things. the fact that most of these people are so clueless about other cultures makes it very dangerous as a previous poster said. Not knowing the history of a country you are so arrogant and hellbent on invading is dangerous. Anyone who thinks we are in Iraq to bring it "democracy" or freedom has a lot to learn about our own country's history let alone another country's history. My god ignorance and arrogance are a dangerous combination with dire consequences aren't they?

And as far as PRIDE for my country goes, pride comes when we have resolved our problems within our own borders. Problems of poverty, injustice, corporate greed, problems of environmental catastrophes, clean water, clean air, and education that is number one in the world. When we achieve these, we deserve our pride. But being proudful and boastful when in fact there is so much that needs to be done is quite frankly, ignorant and arrogant.
A very wise person once said, "Pride goeth before the fall." And, those same people who claim that America is superior should keep that saying in mind. Arrogance is not a virtue.

["when in reality, social mores and folkways prevent humans from ever being totally free to do whatever they want"]

Interesting thought... Generally, when people do what they want, they end up worse off and in a deeper slavery than they ever were before. Think of the people who can't do what they really want because they don't have enough money and then win the lottery. Many end up in debt and more of a financial SLAVE to all the new stuff they have -- they are less free than before. OR what about people who want to be free to try a certain drug. Often instead of being free they end up where all they think and talk about or spend money on is the stupid drug [usually alcohol]. It's an irony that when people feel free to do whatever they want, they usually end up enslaved worse than they were before.

People will only be truly free when they WANT to do what is right. -- But, are people really able to give up being their own gods and truly love one another?

Americans have a million more reasons to be proud than ashamed. The Iraq war was a mistake but with what we thought we knew at the time, is seemed to be a legitmate choice. Be that as it may, we must stay and put things right (or leave if it seems that will help the situation more.)

I suggest you escape from the Chinese fortune cookie factory ASAP.

I truly hope you do not believe in this concept. The world is not nearly as enormous as you may make it seem. I have a good idea of whats going on, and I go out of my way to look into these topics.

Social mores and folkways prevent humans from being animals...

Get into the real world... please.

i agree. people don't have a clue what is going on in this country or the world. they just watch television and read the papers and believe what is written or what they are told. I wish people would stay informed about what is going on and stand up for our rights.. if this doesn't happen, it will be sad to see what the state of the country will be in 50 years from now. I have a 1 year old and think about what it will be like for her in the future..

And isn't it nice that you were able to express yourself in this forum. Unlike in some countries say such as China where Internet is screened. And prior to the US going to Iraq if you would have said things against Saddam his family or government you might be taking your life in your own hands.
