I would only even consider wearing it if you have something colorful to cover it. But you mention a sweater? If its summer where you are, won't that be a bit hot? Unless you're sure you won't take it off I would get a new dress. And a cape let won't cover much of the dress.
But here is a link to a Boston Globe article that says wearing white as a guest is no long taboo

Skip the white dress plan.
Ok you can plan to wear something over it. But what if it gets warm? Inside, dancing, lots of people, you might want to take that sweater off.
Then you will attract more attention than is appropriate because you are wearing the same colour as the bride.
It's not done.
People should be able to spot the bride in the blink of an eye. You do not want to be mistaken for her.
You're a guest and you want her in the spotlights, not you. Wear something else on such a special occasion.

I would not recommend wearing an all white dress. You could perhaps get away with wearing something over it, but then you're stuck wearing it the whole time. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, I'd say check the clearance rack at the department stores. There should be plenty of pretty dresses leftover from prom and graduation season. Have fun.

I see no problem in wearing white to a wedding, as long as it is tastefully done and not done to be in comparison to the bride. After all, it is her big day and she is the one who will be shining. I really don't think it matters if you wear a sweater or not. You may want one just in case of cooler weather though. But I think that formal clothing of any kind to a wedding is appropriate, no matter what the color of it is. Just don't try to look like part of the wedding party if you're not!

If its a summer wedding it is OK for the guests to wear white. If you want to add a little colour, why not buy a nice necklace, some bracelets or a broach. You could always get a bright sash as well. If you wear a sweater over your dress you may get hot, receptions can get toasty when people are dancing.

It is not considered proper to wear white at a wedding. Only the bride should wear white.

I wouldn't wear it. I think its improper to wear all white to someone's wedding. The bride should be the only one. Find another cheap summer dress, there are a ton on sale now.

It really depends on how formal the wedding is . A more formal wedding would consider this a faux pa where as a more casual wedding would not care.

I would find out the colors of the wedding and then find a cardigan that would match that you can wear over your sundress.
