Only if two things can happen.
1- you know the root of the depression,
2- it is something that you can do something about.

Meds are not necessary. In fact meds are harm-full. Your body produces all the chemicals you ever need. Medication is a catalyst that triggers these chemicals, does not actually provide the chemicals, so what happens is that you pull the trigger so many times that you mess up your natural chemical reaction process. This mess-up is what leads to chemical drug dependency because your organism will stop triggering the chemicals on it's own. If you think you have a problem try to focus and try to put yourself into situations where you can have positive affects (your body/brain will react accordingly and supply the chemicals you need). Self hypnosis works very well and it's very healthy. I cannot stand all these drug companies that give you these magic pills that they say are harmless. Your body reacts to everything, but your body has been conditioned over thousands of years too accept natural substances (food, water, herbs), so how is it that artificially made substances can be harmless. Your body is a vehicle for observing and moving through life and only 1 is given to you per lifetime, so treat it well. Listen to what it tells you and don't pollute it, because you don't get another one if you mess-up.

Most important issue here is what type of depression, clinical I say no way, best for meds and above all, help groups and psych.
If its just a passing thing due to illness in family, loss of something that was so special, then take a walk into a child's oncology ward and think really....how depressed can I be when there are these issues out there in the world.
But one thing to keep in mind, dont let it linger if it hangs tough on your shoulders, there is help in many forms, cog, meds, etc......but if you feel that its keeping you pretty distant from life and your normal routine, dont be be afraid to get help.

The jury is still out on the success of treating depression with supplements and/or diet. There are many, therpeutically-based ways to treat deprssion though, without prescription drugs.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), more than 80 percent of people with major depression can be treated successfully with psychotherapy, medical therapy or a combination of both. However, up to 50 percent may not respond to initial treatment. The treatment options available for major depression are quite varied and individualized. Mild forms of the disorder may respond well to psychotherapy alone, whereas moderate to severe forms typically require medication treatment (e.g., antidepressants). The outcome of treatment is generally best with a combination of psychotherapy and medication. During treatment, the patient’s mood will improve gradually, with the patient feeling a little better each day.
You can read more about different types of therapy below. Wishing you well!

I guess it depends on the cause of the depression. If it is genetic or hereditary you may need more that natural treatment. If is is caused by a tragic event or circumstances or stress, yes, perhaps it can be treated naturally. You need to talk to a doctor to get at the source and then the remedy. Make sure you are eating right and getting exercise. Nobody wants to exercise when they are depressed, but it really helps.

It depends. Some people need the meds, and it is foolish of them to try to get out of it. All they are doing is delaying the inevitable and hurting themselves long term. BUT... some people simply don't need them. A little therapy might help. Getting more exercise and eating right might help. The best thing you can do is discuss it with your doctor, express your desire to avoid meds IF possible, and go from there. The doctor is the expert, not you.

Hi there
St.John's wort is a popular herb that is used to threat depression.
It has been shown to be very useful for mild and moderate depression but not severe.
It carries some potential side effects and should not be used with other medication.
And you should definitely consult with your doctor before starting using it.
I hope this helps:)
