Get away from said church. They'll run your faith into the ground.
Coming from a pagan, and you can tell your minister if you want: Harry Potter has 0 real witchcraft in it. We don't point wands and scream nonsensical words-only idiots do that.
It's fiction. There's no gods or goddesses or worship whatsoever involved. You don't see them burning candles in the Crone's name, do you? Then it's got no bearing on anything regarding witchcraft or paganism.
Besides, if a fantasy book can shake the faith of kids, maybe christianity needs to pause and figure out what they're doing wrong that's making these kids so impressionable.
Edit: After reading through these answers-yikes. And christians think we hate -them-? They're talking quite contently and relaxedly about murdering everyone just for the sake of our religion and daring to practice it... and thank the gods people are showing their obvious support of peacefulness between the religions in all these negative votes toward these answers... but still! GOOD GODS!
You know what? Im me. I'll enlighten you as to how 'witchcraft' works so you know the difference and you don't end up being so ignorant of the truth as these people are. No-I won't try to convert or corrupt you. We don't do that. Besides. It'd be bad karma for me if I did.

Not weird just confused about the actual content of the book.
According to the bible, magical powers are not a gift from God and therefore are evil. When one uses magic they are trying to be God.
But Lord of the Rings has Gandalf, Elves, and other magical creatures that are good. That book also have very many parallels with the Bible, so why is one ok and the other not. Harry Potter is a "good" character trying to defeat the evil in the world. Besides it's fiction, anyone who wants to practice magic because of a book needs to be smacked across the face.

I've found an interesting correlation in terms of this controversy.
The vast majority who are the most vocal about the Harry Potter books have never read the books themselves. That's okay that they don't read them. Ironically, those Christians who have read the Harry Potter books do not see the controversy. Is it simply that these Christians who like Harry Potter are all deluded, or is it because we see that the controversy is not that factual.
I would recommend to any family considering allowing their kids to read Harry Potter books to read them first and to decide for themselves whether the books are okay.

It's normal by religious standards. But to the rest of us, yeah.
All the church's reasons not to watch harry potter are bunk. And they don't like other fiction taking away their followers.

YES! Pretty soon some of these churches and their fanatics will bring back good old fashioned book burning! Why should you let someone tell you what you should and should not read. That is beyond ridiculous. You should read what ever you want to read, what will happen? Oh no, you might learn something and think for yourself. Organized religion is just a way to control the masses. Seriously, think about it!

Your church is not weird. I have dealt with a number of people who ask about these things. I have found by reading some of the Harry Potter books that the spells and mantras that the books speak of are actually spells and mantras used by different sects of wicca and other cults who use witchcraft. These spells and mantras are then put in the hands of very teachable children. I think this is wrong and evil. Just my opinion though.

I think it's weird and censoring. Why can't you make this decision for yourself? What is the church so afraid of, should you read this book? It's fiction. It's not like anyone is trying to pass off this book written by humans as an exact history that needs to be followed, like the bible.

The Bible clearly condemns withcraft.
Another problem with fantasy, is that it dulls us. It satisfies our longing for the supernatural, our longing for the extraordinary. It would be better to seek God for true spiritual gifts, than to spend time in being dulled by a fantasy land.
Having said that, I don't think they're necessarily sinful. Just not conducive to living the best we can for the Lord.
They can also be traps for people who have weakness in the area of temptation when it comes to the supernatural.
I read the first two books, and saw the first three movies before I was convicted by the Spirit that I should leave them alone. From what I saw of them, they have a tendency toward encouraging children to disobedience and portraying a world where children can't trust adults, because the adults are either evil, or unable to help them. This may be more dangerous than the occult nature of the books.
Why don't you make an appointment with your pastor or an elder, and ask them for an explanation of why they discourage people from Harry Potter?

Do what you feel like. How will Harry Potter make you a non-chriatian? It won't it's just a fiction book like Stephen King.
If you find then interesting then read them. Why would you change your faith just because of it.
