At least you've set yourself a truly reasonable goal of 1-3 years to ave a flat stomach. A lot of people expect results in just weeks. Fair play to you.
Crunches are a muscle building exercise, just like any other. In that respect they will work wonders for your ab muscles, but they will NOT help you lose fat on your tummy. If you want a flat stomach basically all you need to do is watch your diet and do lots of cardio. Running, swimming, sports, exercise machines in the gym, anything that makes you sweat is using up energy. And that energy is from burning fat. Unfortunately you can't lose weight in just a specific area, when you exercise you lose it all over.
However, 1-3 years is a very achievable time frame to lose some weight. Stick to cardio 3-4 times a week, 30-60 minutes at a time. It's a nuisance to begin with, but over time you will get into a routine, a habit, and you'll enjoy it especially when you see results.
And keep doing the crunches, because when you lose the weight you want the abs underneath to be nice and toned.

A good balance of running (cardio) and toning (like crunches) can help you achieve a flat stomach. Without cardio however, doing crunches is about as useless as putting hotdogs on a grill but not turning the grill on.
Try running a mile every other day, and doing crunches after ward. You'll start to see results in a few weeks, but nothing drastic until about three or four months. That usually works. However, remember, depending on your body type, there may be a certain amount of fat you may never be able to lose, so keep your hopes high and don't set your expectations too up there or you'll be dissapointed.

Okay, here's the deal. Crunches will tone the muscles hiding under the fat. You can have abs of steel, but if there is fat covering it up you would never know it. What you have to do to flatten your stomach is a combination of cardio and toning exercises. The cardio will burn calories and get rid of some of the excess flab. The toning (crunches, leg lifts, plank position) will tighten the muscles. Giving yourself a timeline of 1-3 years is a lot more reasonable than 2 months. Exercise can't make your stomach flat all on its own though-- you should also check your diet. You can exercise like crazy, but if you still fill your body with junk, you won't notice any difference. Good luck!

Do crunches help to make you stomach go flat?
My body is building up to much fat and now my belly sticks out. Im too fat now but I want to make my stomach flat. Do crunches work cos it takes a long time i want my stomch to be flat in 1-3 years time. I have heard that exercise machines can make it go down in 2 months but is it true.

This is my answer for another question - but also applies here:
Straight crunches is a good start, but it actually can cause your stomach muscles to sort of bunch up right there, which of course won't give you the flat look you are looking for. Cardio - getting rid of any extra little stuff hanging out on your stomach is very important. Currently I have - I would say a 2 pack - working towards an eventual 6 pack and here is my workout.
I squeeze this in 2 or 3 times a day - lunch breaks - whatever
60 crunches: 20 straight, 20 aiming with right elbow to left knee, 20 aiming left elbow to right knee
30 Rope climbers - lay on your back with your legs straight up in the air & pretend you are trying to climb a rope hanging over your head - (or reach straight up with the right hand then alternate to the left.) making sure your upper back stays off the floor the whole time
60 reps bicycle (fast speed side ways crunches - right knee & left elbow both come in together & touch, then Left knee & Right elbow both come in & touch- repeat 60 times)
20 X Hang up side down from my hanging punching bag & sit up towards the ceiling.
60 reverse crunches - punch the feet up to the ceiling getting lower back off the ground
In between each of these & anytime I have time - I also hold a push up position ensuring the back is perfectly straight & stomach tucked in for apx. 1 min. That will work well.
I like these becasue except for one - you can drop down whenever you have 5 min. For me that has been the key; I work 2 jobs & am a full time student - so squeezing in is important, but I think it has also been working because I'm doing a little all day instead of like a major workout every couple of days.
I know that stretching before & after is very important to get long lean flat muscles as opposed to squatty ones

First thing first you have to change your diet ...there a healthy way to tone and get fit then there's the unhealthy way....When many people hear the word DIET they immediately think "loose weight" but you can alternate your diet to suit you. First of you have to stop eating the foods with vast amount of calories...like foods high in sugar, start eating things like (oatmeal, wheat cornflakes etc.) Replace your soda intake and sweet drinks with water. When you get hungry during the day replace the snacks with fruit and non fat yogurt. You can also start doing cardio....running or jogging helps the best time to run is in the morning when your stomach is empty. This is because you've slept over night and while you're running your body is going need energy and that when it uses the fat stored in your stomach to give you that energy. As long as you stick to your diet and exercise you will definitely start seeing results. And you can start doing sit-ups and toning

I've tried many diets and couldn't make anything work. Since having my first child, I've been carrying around an extra 30 pounds. This diet just made sense and showed me that everything I was doing before was wrong and a waste of my time.
The plan was so refreshing and so simple to follow. I did everything plan said and lost 23 pounds in the first three weeks. I'm now starting the diet again to lose 7 more pounds. This plan has changed my life.
Get started today!

Crunches won't reduce fat, although the exercise will tone your muscles. If you do crunches without losing weight you will have well toned muscles under the fat. You can lose the fat by doing some type of aerobic exercise and reducing your calorie intake.
Sorry for being blunt, but that's the way its. Been there.

Go for protein rather then sugar to keep energy levels going strong as an alternative to crashing. Edamame in pods is the perfect snack since it takes time to eat and a one-cup portion offers 12 grams of healthy proteins.

crunches, sit ups etc just build muscle they dont burn fat so if you have fat on your abs it will just make your belly look bigger
the only fat burning exercise is cardio -burns fat all over your body - you cant spot reduce body fat - do it 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min) and combine with light weight training because cardio burns both - fat and muscle (more muscle = faster metabolism)
