The most likely cause is that you don't have the linux drivers loaded for your network card. (You SHOULD have been asked about setting up your network when you loaded the Linux. IF you weren't, it could NOT identify your network card!)

IF it was an add-on card, check the disc that came with it for linux drivers and install them. (BE sure it is 'linux compatible', many are not, as they depend on windows to supply ALL the control software! Similar to 'winmodems')

If it was a built-in or you have no disc, check the manufacturers website for linux drivers.
(IF it is on the MB, check the specs. SOMETIMES even if they don't have specific drivers listed, it will tell you what TYPE it is and then you can find a 'generic' driver that will work.)

Read your Linux docs for loading instructions if it is not automatic.

Quick correction for Geek, isn't it Ubuntu 7?

Tend to agree that with limited info here drivers are first priority.

When you installed LInux - it probably did not load all the drivers - most likely your NIC.
Getting drivers could be problematical - Google Linux drivers for your particular NIC.

Wireless, I bet.

Try a wired connection, works every time. Wireless rarely works without a lot of tweaking.

TIP: the free Kubuntu 7 sees most wifi devices.
