I need to quit my job, it's killing me inside, but I need to take a break, not take a job out of desperation.

I have been working since I was 15 years old.My mom is a basketcase on disability who kicked me out at age 17.My dad is a miserable workaholic who will do anything to save a dime.My dad feels guilty for my mom kicking me out so he has bought beater cars for me for the last 12 years.He holds the car over my head while he calls me a stupid child (I'm a 30 year old woman).I am smart and have survived on my own,graduated college, and other things I am proud of.But I have never had time to really figure out what I want.I hate my job,I want to quit and just take a break.So I can think and relax.I don't even know what that feels like.My stomach is in knots and my life has hit rock-bottom.How can I do this?Should I file for unemployment?How can I survive without going into debt?I just recently escaped from debt,and I don't want to go down that path again.I need to rest.I can't stand coming to this office hell,yet I don't want to jump into another job out of desperation for money again. Help.

ask for a 2 week leave under FLMA ( no you do not get paid, but you will still have a job to come back to)

If you quit a job.. you are not eligible for any unemployment for 12 weeks ( its the penalty for quitting a job)

I think that a lot of people can appreciate your position. I think that you need to reorganize your life. I would get rid of all of the unhealthy relationships that you have including the job. Life is just too short to be unhappy. If you still have debt pay it off before you leave. Try to put some money away. Pare down your expenses; rent, etc. Don't spend anything that you don't have to. Give yourself a time frame of when you want to be ready to quit. If you quit you won't be able to file for unemployment. You may want to consider looking into volunteer experiences where the organization will put you up to do a particular job. This sort of work is such a learning and growth experience and looks great on the resume. But get rid of your expenses first. Good Luck

First of all to stay out of debt you have to keep working. I doubt that your job is the root of your anxiety. Probably has more to do with your dysfunctional family. Get them out of your life for now. Who needs enemies when you have a father telling you such negative things? I'm not saying you have to stay in this job you have now, just don't do anything in a hurry.
Sit down and decide what you want to do in life. You say you have a degree, so where do your passions lie? The car you have now, is it yours or your dads? Get out of this bondage you have with him. You are way too old to be in 'car prison'. Unemployment is not the answer. It may look good but I don't think 'resting' is really the answer. You are much stronger than you think. You are still very young. You have to get it together. If you think life is hard now, you better get a grip for the later years because it only gets harder unless you prepare yourself for these 'storms' in life. Maybe you should change jobs, but take your time. Go to one of those employment places and see if they can help place you in something better. It may mean a cut in pay for a while, but you do need to be happier. Network with friends and acquaintences, maybe they know of something available to you. Surround yourself with positive relationships. Volunteering is a great way to find a permanent job. Many times if your are a great volunteer, people will see that you would make a great employee too. Paying you is taking money from them, and you're a in charge guy or woman who could make a distinction in the animals. what's greater efficient? Can you take a paid leave of absence from your job? Sometimes employers offer a paid leave of absence for at least a month or two. You can discuss with your boss or supervisor training a temp while you take a month off for PERSONAL REASONS. You must say personal reasons or they might not let you do it. As for what to do on your time off, there is some validtity in remembering what you loved to do as a child. Did you love cooking? Work at a restaurant. Did you love digging in the dirt? Look into becoming a landscape designer. Were you successful with a lemondae stand? Maybe you could start catering weddings. The best thing to do is to figure out what you love, and then get paid money doing what you love.
You also need to get away from your emotionally abusive dad. It's okay to still love him (I had to learn how to love an abusive father as well) but it's okay to love him from 500 miles away. Maybe you could take the time to research careers in another state. Maybe you could do the same thing you do now but in a better, different working environment. There are lots of options for you - more than you realize.
If you are single, consider working for an amusement park or concession for a national park where the company offers housing. Yosemite National Park, for example, offers housing to all their employees for a fraction of their paycheck (I think it was up to $30 a week last time I checked.) They have lots of jobs to choose from, and lateral moves within the company are encouraged. You may spend your first 60 cleaning hotel rooms, but you can always apply for a job as a ski lift operator or lifeguard at the swimming pool or cashier at the deli. You also do not really need a car up in Yosemite as the buses in the valley are free and there is regular bus service to the towns outside of the park. I used to work at Yosemite when I was single. The pay was small then but I could pay my truck payments because rent and food were cheap. It was a great way to get out of the city, live in nature and get paid for it.
Disney World Orlando Resorts also has some employee housing available, and lots of different jobs to choose from. The college students will be leaving come August, that's a great time to apply to vacation resorts. It's also a great way to get out of town and be 'on vacation' on your days off.

Well first get your own car, and dont depend on your dad if he is going to talk to you in that manner. You can finance a car and just kinda sacrifice to make the payments. See if you can go to your doctor and maybe he will give you a few days of rest and you can use your sick time, that way you can think about what you really want to do and make a plan for it. That way you can keep your job and stay under doctor's orders and still get paid.

You will have to get fired in order to collect unemployment benefits. Since you are completely capable of doing your job, but you want to get fired anyways, do something completly annoying all the time so that others will want you to leave.
Start eating lots of baked beans or something that makes you fart all the time. Eventually they will want you out of there and they'll fire you saying its just not working out.

BTW: Dont tell your employer you need a break from your job, otherwise he can tell the Unemployment Office and they can deny you benefits.

You are crashing, there is no doubt about that.

Another option is to take a leave of absence. Vacation time?

You need the break but don't set yourself up to be knocked down. I take it you aren't married.

Getting on unemployment is next to impossible, especially if you quit your job.

Is there any way you can take a leave of absence? You can reevaluate what you want to do. Yes, you won't get paid, but you won't lose your job, either. Also, this gives you time to look for another job. The first step would be to talk to your employer but it sounds to me like you already tried this.
