You probably don't want to go less than 1.5mbps (DSL). Ask the provider what are the options they have.. some say High speed, blazing speed, 10x faster than dail-up (or 3x faster than DSL), etc. You don't need that, ask them for the mbps (megabits per second) and then if they say we have 256bps or anything with just bps (bits per second) say no.. that's basically dail up. If they say 1.5 and up that's good. Usually providers have 1.5mbps, 3mbps, 4mbps, 6mbps, and 8mbps at most. So any of those at the cheapest price would be your best bet. I have 1.5mbps and my friend just got 3mbps.. and her's is way faster. She downloaded a 60mb file that took 3 minutes... my internet would have taken 15min. (In case you don't know mb, 60mb is probably like 20 mp3s or 40 digital pictures)

Also there are a lot of phone and cable companies that provide internet (e.g. AT&T and Comcast). Try to see if there are alternatives to that in your area. I live in Miami and that's all there is, as well as Earthlink. In Miami Beach, it's only Earthlink and Atlantic Broadband (which is what my friend has).

You might want to look at your Phone Book for Cable providers and Telephone providers. They'll have Highspeed DSL and Highspeed Cable.

Good luck!

Rural is the next big market for all the Internet service providers, so it will not be a big shock if high speed iternet will be available in Indian rural areas.
