From the very beginning, the US started the Afghanistan adventure on a very narrow minded policy based on taking revenge for the 9-11 tragedy. The very fundamental question should have been asked In fact, the US policy revived the dying warlords, robbers, drug lords, murderers, rapists who were all put in check by the Taliban prior to US intervention. The situation is such that now, the more the conflict is broadened the more the warlords, robbers, drug lords, murderers, rapists will benefit. It is very simple. The more bombs = more $$ for the warlords. More insecurity = More $$ for the private security firms. More Bombs = More $$ for the Private Armies. More bombs = More salaries for the Afghan Government officials. More Bombs = More Salaries for the Contract Workers
More Bombs = More Salary for the UN Workers.
But unfortunately the only big losers in this dirty conflict are the US and NATO soldiers and the innocent Afghan population.

Dear John,
Thanks for taking time and replying. First I have to tell you that I have been in Afghanistan helping the reconstruction of this war turn country. To prove my point, it is getting more and more difficult to work (security wise). Second, I am not Taliban and in no way will sympathize with Taliban. All I am doing is to try to make sense of the situation in Afghanistan. I think, one of the major predicament for us is looking at things as “BLACK and WHITE”. If America and Americans like you and me want to lead the world, then we need to educate ourselves beyond this frame of mind “your are either with us or against us”. We need to spend some time studying and respecting other (stranger) cultures. If we keep going the way we are going, then we are heading towards failure not only in Afghanistan but all over the world.

Afghanistan has always been a very tough nut to crack. I think it is a country that has never actually been conquered. If the US wanted to seriously reform Afghanistan (and that is a good idea considering the Taliban was complicit in the 9-11 plot) it would require a serious effort, and splitting off the military effort required for Afghanistan to the needless war against Iraq makes that virtually impossible. Thus, one war could have been won and now two will be lost, taking our economy over the cliff at the same time.

And now for the other side. In the past two hundred years the British have invaded Afghanistan five times. In the first invasion they lost over 15,000 men and had one survivor.
The Russians three of four times, Iranians, Tadjiks you name it. We are just one more pox visited on the Afghans.

Daft, Who said the situation is getting worse? Guess you haven't been there. I can tell you it is better now than it was then, unless of course you are Taliban and consider girls going to school and women voting to be a bad thing. Or if you wish for the days when you could cut off a woman's head because she showed her eyes.

Attacking Afghanistan was not for 'revenge'. It's so that the those who attacked us on 9/11 are not left unabated and unopposed to do it again. It's about the security of the people of the US.

As far as how difficult it is, wars are difficult and imperfect.

And my family and friends are over there protecting people like you because you are a coward that cannot defend yourself so you sit there and run your mouth when I have hundreds of friends overseas who SEE the improvement and if you want proof, get off your butt and enlist, quit enjoying the benefits of your freedom if you don't appreciate who give them to you.

if we call ourselves as civilised society, then we should learn to solve our problems through systems and not by war. war is divided and extended wing of jungle law. fraction of the energy spent in war if spent in devicing systems to avoid it, today our position would have been much better than now. if USA has to behave outside the characters of UNO, what is the use of having UNO at all?
