Have you personally ever owned a pit, and if so what made it so bad. I own an Am Staff/Rotti cross and he is the best dog ever!

OK and whoever made the statement that I called everyone Pit Bull haters, that's not true. It was your choice to answer the question.

These answers are very interesting to read. I am glad (?) to see that the people who had negative responses were at least basing them upon real situations that either affected them personally or had some sort of impact upon them, rather than basing their opinion on nothing at all. At least those people with negative experiences have a reason for disliking pit bulls, and that is understandable. I would probably feel the same way if my experience with pit bulls was negative (or any dog for that matter).
I would be curious, as a pit bull owner myself, what, if anything, could I be doing better as an owner to improve public opinion? Or do those who have negative feelings about pit bulls feel that there is nothing that can be done and the breed(s) are tarnished permanetly for them?
Good question!

I don't own a Pit Bull, but I do co-own a Rottie. I have worked with a lot of Pit Bulls and if they are brought up in a loving home they are the best dogs ever. A very dear friend of mine has a Pit Bull Rescue and has saved some from being fighting dog and has rehabilitated them. Yes, they are wonderful dogs. If one is abusive to a Golden Retriever they will turn too. It's not the breed it's the owners. What is needed is more education on living with pets. I am sure your dog is wonderful and you have done a great job with him. Give him a hug from me;^) All the best...

I agree with you as far as pits being great dogs. I have never owned one but have had friends who have. However, you don't hear on the news a poodle put a child in the hospital, you only hear about the pit bulls. ! had one even try to attack me in my backyard (dug under my fence) I personally, blame the owners, Because owners use then to protect meth houses and for dog fighting they are getting a bad reputation. I understand it is only a few but that is what you hear. Their jaw can be so damaging besides. Maybe, if we were harsher on the owners of animals the pits would not have such a bad reputation. I am not a hater, i like pits.

I don't have to own a Pit Bull to know that I don't trust them. Too many of this breed have gone bad and harmed people. In some cases it's the owners fault. A strongly aggressive dog, a one-person or one-family dog must be closely controlled by the owner, and I believe this is the problem in many cases.
BUT
It's well known that these dogs tend to have problems being aggressive, sometimes to humans, sometimes to other animals. The best judge of your dog is not just how he is with YOU, but how well socialized is he to other people and animals!
Do NOT ASSUME that we are all Pit Bull HATERS! That's YOUR MISCONCEPTION... not reality!
One final thought... if your dog is only PART Pit Bull, then it will have a different personality as it may get all or part of it's personality from the other breed and parent.

I have been breeding full blooded American Pit Bull Terriers for 15 years and have 30 years total experience with the breed. I have been to a number of APBT kennels over the years and between those other yards and my own, I have never had a single dog ever show even the slightest sign of aggression. My 4 year old and 8 year old nieces help me out with the dogs and my friends send their children to help with some of the dirty work. None of them have ever been shown aggression from any one of my dogs.
The dogs causing the problems are rarely the full blooded (of any pit bull type) dogs. Irresponsible ownership and bad breeding are causing the problems. There is more BYB going on with pit bulls than any other type of dog.
I would also like to add that the term pit bull is used to cover a lot of different breeds from the APBT, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldog, Bull Terrier, several other breeds including any dog that even resembles one of those breeds. There are no other breeds/types of dogs that have their statistics thrown together. Pit bull types are also one of the most misidentified breed.
For those who hate pit bulls for no reason other than what the so-called statistics (which are proven innacurate anyway) go check out the American Temperament Society's web page. The American Pit Bull Terrier has one of the highest passing percentages.

I have never owned a Pit but My wife was attacked, not bit, but attacked 2 weeks ago by an untrained PIT. All dogs are good natured it is the owners that make a dog bad. I still think if you own a Pit you should be made to take a training course at the local SPCA. They have the ability to cause the most damage of any dog. There jaw strength is unmatched.

this question would not help a element, do no longer permit your self be lumped in with what all human beings thinks a Pit Bull proprietor is. lots of the human beings in this internet site understand that no longer all pit bulls are vicious, they are in a position to be, in basic terms like another canine. upward thrust up for the breed, do no longer make your self look as though a fool while the solutions by technique of pit bull haters will say something like "i could fairly no longer be saved with the aid of fact the pit bull will kill me besides." i admire the thumbs down fairie in this question, what a moron.

Pit Bulls are great dogs with the right owners and that goes for every breed of dog. Our family Pit Bull is one of the sweetest most loving dogs to everyone and everything. So our my friends Pit Bulls. My Lab and the Pit are insperable and my LAb terrorizes the Pit Bull constantly and the Pit bull puts up with it all. I hate what a bad rap they have.

One little known thing about pit bulls is that it is not a breed any more than tabby is a breed of cat. It's a strain that can run in many dogs so the animal can have many different kinds of looks. Most people can't identify which dogs have the pit bull in them and which don't.

Most people hate them because of what they have read or heard. They have never actually owned one.
ANY dog that is not trained or treated right(abused) can have problems
I own a pit bull(APBT) and she is the sweetest dog ever
Some people will not have anything to do with her or gasp when I tell them the kind of dog I have.....it's not fair the reputation she burden with.
