the bible was not 'written'. it is a compilation of stories written by men over the course of some 1600 years and all with different agendas or messages they were trying to convey be it social constraint, law giving, sanitary concerns and so forth. the 66 'books' contained in the bible were picked and chosen by church leaders specifically for the messages they gave, then formalized by order of constantine, who financed and distributed the finalized version in the 4th century. it is interesting to note that nothing has ever been added or subtracted to the 'bible' since that time. this became the way to maintain control of the masses who, for the most part, could not read or write and were at the mercy of ambitious men who had their own agendas and delusions of grandeur. sadly, over a billion of the worlds people still cannot see this for what it is and remain under the spell of a non existent supernatural being all because of the written words of stone-age, superstitious men who simply did not, and could not, understand how the world works.

The Bible wasn't "written" as most other (planned) books are. It's a collection of various writings from various sources spanning centuries. They weren'y all written for the same reasons. So the quesiton is really "Why was it put together?"
It was put together for organizational purposes, for the sake of practicality. A council decided which scriptures seem "divinely inspired" to them and which ones didn't. That's why some scriptures like "The Gospel of Thomas" exist but didn't make it.

People wanted to perserve knowledge (real or perceived) to be handed down to the generations after them.
Most of the stories in the bible were handed down from oral tradition. They were compiled in the bible, but of course - just like a game of telephone, it is hard to say how accurate any (if not all) of it is.
There is wisdom contained in the bible - but most people miss it because it is all wrapped up in a bunch of religious nonsense.

Oral traditions handed down were more effective if they were written down. Less error that way. Lots n lots of tribal people went to this once they had the technology. Easier to codify law that way.

God wanted the bible written so we could have His living word with us always. God is a living God and His word is alive.

What I think is irrelevant and what you think is irrelevant. The bible declares itself to be the word of God, and there is plenty of credible evidence for this. To introduce my opinion about why it was written is arrogant in the highest degree, though there are plenty of people who make the mad rush to declare that it was written in order to control the masses. Please!

For our understanding of God and to keep us grounded in His truth- This is for our edification and building up in the truth.
It holds the truth, the gospel of Jesus Christ which is the most important thing you will ever hear- For faith comes from hearing and hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17)
All of the Bible is applicable to our daily lives- God teaches us through His word- communicates to us through His word- and it is what keeps us separated from the world, from the enemy- for it is the power of God!
