An anesthesiologist is a doctor, who specializes in pain relief, your most common contact with one would be during surgery.Basically, he puts the patient to sleep or sedates him.

This requires
1/ a 4 year BS or BA degree
2/ a degree from a school of medicine or osteopathy ( 4 years)
3./ a 3 year residency in Anesthesiology at an accredited hospital.
4. Obtaining a license from the state, to practice medicine.

Anesthesiologist is the doctor that puts the patients asleep for surgery. They monitor the patients vitals etc.. during surgery, but don't perform the surgery. Also administers procedures like an epidural (spinal block).

You need a full blown medical MD or DO to be an Anesthesiologist.
