I'm guessing that since you posted your question in genealogy that you are wanting to know who lived in the house way back in time. Most libraries keep old directories in their local history/genealogy department. I would consult those old directories and build a timeline that way. You could also go to the county clerk and search the indexes for deeds of ownership; however, if the house was lived in by renters, those deeds won't reflect it.

It's a great question. But the question in return is...which year?

For the ownership of the property in the last 50 years, contact your county assessor's office and the county's Recorder of Deeds office. Then you'll have names and dates of ownership and can verify that they occupied the house by pulling the phone listings from the county library's Reference section.

For anything older than that, call the Reference librarian at the county library and ask her to look up the address in the Polk's Reverse Directory.
