"US researchers have for the first time injected human stem cells into monkeys with Parkinson's symptoms, seen as a key step in the fight to find a cure. The stem cells, which have been injected into rodents in the past, initially stopped the monkeys' damaged brain cells from deteriorating." --BBC news

Because making people suffer is a good thing, according to the Bible. God drowned, tortured, and slaughtered millions (lots more than Hitler), conspired to have his own kid beaten and executed, and repeatedly commanded his followers to hurt and kill thousands of people. It's very clear, to anyone who has actually READ the ENTIRE Bible, that God does NOT value human life. And still they consider him to be "good" and "loving". I personally think they're a little mixed up.

As a devout Catholic I oppose embryonic stem cell research and IVF, just so others realize they both have the same draw back.

The drawback being the creation of a human being and then the destruction of that human being.

With embryonic stem cells, a embryo is created and then killed in order to harvest the stem cells. I do not think it is right to create and then kill a human being for the sole purpose of helping or prolonging the life of another.

In IVF, more then one egg is fertilized and more then one person is created...as many as 7 human beings are created. Two or three are planted into the womb and the others are frozen as backups. If the first selected take...the others are used for research...or whatever.

It's all just so wrong.

Since you are getting a lot of responses from people who don't understand the fundamentalist viewpoint on this, let me share what I know of their viewpoint.

There are some compelling reasons why fundamentalists decry stem cell research. Because it is from human life at it's earliest stages. The reasoning here is that you are entering a slippery slope here in terms of ethics. Who has the right to choose which life it allowed to live and which one will be destroyed? Our society now is conditioned to see this fertilized life as insignificant because it cannot feel pain and is not yet formed (and it is defined as life scientifically once it is fertilized).

The slippery slope comes in from the fact that if we allow this to happen at this point, will we be conditioned for the next step to think it's acceptable to reject human life. Where do we draw the line here?

Think of it in this term. If a mother has an accident and the baby dies as a result, the parents feel that they have the right to sue because their baby died, right?

It seems that the ultimate decision is in terms of whether the child is wanted or not wanted. If it's unwanted, it's a collection of cells, or a fetus. It's never considered a baby.

I'm excited though about another form of research going on. That is umbilical cord research. If this form of research becomes useful, it will eliminate any controversy as the cords could then be used for many of the same types of research. So, I wonder why we don't push for more umbilical cord research.

And besides, I think the issue here is that we oppose federal funding for stem cell research. If those who really want fetal stem cells to be used for this research, why not fund it yourself?

Let's be clear: Embryonic stem cell research or adult stem cell research?

We oppose Embryonic stem cell research because you destroy one human being to help another (theoretically, since it hasn't worked.) Do we really want to go there?

We are completely for Adult stem cell research because it has shown promise and does not harm a person for the sake of another.

Edit: It is interesting to read how wrong some people are, in this case the non-religious folk and what they think Christians think. Why do they even post things they have no clue about?

You said Human Stem Cells
Embryonic or Adult Stem Cells or Placenta Stem cells?

As for why, in the case of Human Embryonic Stem Cells, they are human unborn children being grown and harvested to be used for other people, taking a human life to save another is barbaric.
Disagree if you want,

Stem cell research done from babies is a sin. period. Not right to kill someone else so you can life or have a better life. ALl are entitled to life. If GOd wants us to live, we will. If its our time, then we go. Babies are human , and they have humand dna, and they are alive, as they are growing and changing. And much of this is all hype anyhow. Thre is so much being done right now with Adult stem cell research, but that is held bac. Easier to keep killing the unborn babies, what an execuse to murder. God says not to murder, that simple. How could anyone enjoy life knowing that a baby had to die for them? How selfish, but this society that is so far from God is selfish. Only when we go back to God and obey Him, will se stop the curses now coming upon us. Like Katrina, you name it. God is trying to get our attention but few are getting it. Signs of His soon return are all around us. Only those who love God and look up to Him for all the answers will see and be ready when Jesus comes again. Be it better for some to die earlier than to take a babies life and live longer. I couldnt live with myself let alone enjoy life. What has happened to our conscious? Didnt used to be this way, on this high of a scale anyone. We are a nation that has abadoned Our God and we are paying for it. Read the newspaper lately, or heard the tv news? The more we leave God, the more we are removing Him and HIs protection from our lives. WE better wake up soon, cuz we have to be fully Jesus' before He comes again, or if we die first.
SEek Jesus, He has all the answers we all need. Seek and ye shall find.

G,
What is opposed is the MURDER of the unborn, not the stem cell research. Adult Stem cells have been very successful in assisting with a number of research cures. Why do we need to KILL the unborn to gain additional stem cells? That is the question! The science people have not allowed this information to surface. Have a great week.
Thanks,

They are not opposed to the research..... they are opposed to the researchers using T-cells of embryos and fetuses. The same results can be obtained from adult T-cells. Many view this as a "religion vs. science" issue.... just another subject which might possibly fuel the anti-religion fires. It amazing how many people will believe unfounded second hand information as truth. Many do the same with Christianity and it's beliefs... not taking the time to find the truth themselves.

Much of the success thus far is due to adult stem cells, not embrionic stem cells. Which we dont want to see turned into a business of human harvesting.

You should specify embryonic stem cell research, since that is what they oppose.

Why do religious folk use IVF in the first place? No IVF, no leftover frozen embryos.

Because you're asking us to kill one human being to make others healthier -- if you're talking embryonic stem cells.

Adult stem cells or cord blood? Go for it!
