The painting is like 12ft, too big to transport as it is.

No. There will always be damage from flexing the canvas like you're describing.

To minimize damage, do the following:

1. Find a large cardboard tube. The ones that fine paper are rolled around are good. They have an 18" diameter, or greater.
2. Carefully remove the canvas from the stretcher. Use pliers to remove staples/tacks. Don't cut the canvas if you can help it.
3. Roll the canvas, picture side out, onto the outside of the carboard tube.
4. Roll protective canvas or glassine on the outside of the rolled painting. Secure with tape on the glassine (don't let tape touch the painting face), or twine.

Good luck.

You can. But it depends on how old the painting is. If it is really old (over 10 years) I personally wouldn't recommend it as it will crack. If not take it to a frame shop and they will do it and put it in a roll for shipping. And have a frame shop do the reframing when you get it home.

Yes. It's often done. But you need to know what you're doing.

Only if the museum guard doesn't catch you.
