Why is it , that when ever I go on holiday I always meet peole that want to impress me, tell me how much better they are than me.Go on about how much they have, how all that they have is so much better than yours.
I usually don't play the game, and politly keeping quite, just encourages them.
I just want a quite holiday with the family.
Its just like the harry enfield sketch
any advice .

Yes the silly season is seemingly a good time to meet the opposite sex. I remember quite a few years ago (Im now 48 years young), I went to a fancy night club in Perth WA on new years eve and met what I thought was an attractive friendly compatible woman. The only problem was that I was engaged and my woman was away down south with her family and I couldnt go because of my work commitments. Looking back I wish that I had got her number or something as I am not with the woman I was engaged to any longer and have been single for over 10 years. I suppose when the Xmas holidays are on people really are looking for someone more than atc any other time which makes sense. We are all seekling a little love and affection hey but we dont usually come out and say it.

I find that alot of people who go on holiday do so "to get away from it all"
get away from the 9-5... get away from the morgage that they are still paying off 20 years later. to get away from the fact they arent the astronaut they wanted to be as a kid and the closest to the moon they get is looking through the hole in the ceiling in the house they cant afford to pay for let alone repair. to get away from the fact they wanted to be married with kids three years ago but hasnt had a date in 7 years... you get the idea...
so when they go away...to the other side of the world what are the chances your going to meet some one who knows you and everything about you?
people will pretend they are some one else... believe that they are the person they wanted to grow up and be. by telling someone, it reinforces the lie, makes it more believable to the person claiming they were the bad guy in a major film that youve never heard of... its a psychological thing.
the best thing is just to sit and nod your head, think of the great things you have in your life and just be there for that person, you may have just made mr bloggs holiday and made the extra 5 years of debt a little more bearable for them.
If you would rather not sit and talk to them then just tell them to have a nice holiday, your going to see your wife and kids now, you told them you were going to be a few minutes or something... just becuase they may be rude to you or what ever, doesnt mean you have to be rude back. just smile politely and walk away
dont worry, and hope you have a nice holiday!

I have a colleague who did the same to me (and still does to others) until I quoted the following bible passage:-
People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
This is not the exact words but is good enough to shut them up. If they try again repeat the above but add "therefore you must be evil please go away". You do get branded a bible nutter but you do get peace and quiet.
Hope it works for you.

maybe some people use the fact that they probably won't see you again to pretend to be what they're not .. I don't think they're doing it to "impress" -you- (as a person, they just want somebody to be impressed by them). I think they're doing it for their own sake .. they enjoy playing the role, and they find you to be a good audience, because you don't ask too many questions, so they don't have to worry that they might expose themselves by giving contradictory answers.

give people a chance.. maybe they are trying to impress you because they think a lot of you... once you dig a little deeper you might get to know someone you really get on with
Try not to be judgemental and see the best in people... then you won't get irritated so much

Wear clothes with holes in and no shoes then they won't feel like they have to compete with you - you obviously look expensive which can intimidate people...
