By god shield, I mean, rather than try to reason out a response, they will completely ignore the subject of the question, and instead either...
1. Insult you and the fact that you are godless
2. Say "I don't care about that proof, I know Jesus is my savior" (or some other catchphrase they've heard their pastor mention)
3. Tell you they feel sorry for you
I may have left about 50 of them out, but they all amount to the same thing. You catch them in a lie, or in a paradox that disproves their religion, and they refuse to acknowledge it.
One would think that if their truth was so truthful, they would not have this difficulty. Why is it that non-believers can easily refute anything the believers say, and don't have to resort to this?

Edit - Tom N - you obviously are not familiar with me. If you want me to disprove your god for you, send me an email. I make ballsy Christians like yourself run away from me every day.

Hey godshield guy... if you want to chat, you need to email me. Although your insane ramblings are funny for all, you're just going to get one-starred so people don't have to scroll through it all. And as I asked via email... is english your second language, or do you just type so angrily that it comes out all screwed up?

Not all Christians are like that.
I'm a Christian who is happy to explain to you what I believe, without insulting your beliefs or ideas, and hopeful that you won't insult mine. We can exchange ideas, agree to disagree, and both benefit from a wider understanding of a viewpoint other than our own.
I think that many Christians incorrectly view throwing up the "god shield" as you call it, or insulting you, or feeling sorry for you, or resorting to canned phrases, as their way of "witnessing" or "evangelizing." These well-intentioned people, misguided though they might be, should stop while they're ahead, and realize that they're not advancing even their own cause.
My God commands me to treat everyone with unconditional love and unconditional respect. Most of my fellow Christians fail to remember that.
I hope that I'll encounter some of your questions and be able to give thoughtful answers so that we can exchange ideas.

I know exactly what your talking about. I am a Christian but because I have been 'sucked in', so to speak, when I was younger by other 'religions' claiming the truth, that I get frowned upon every once in awhile when I question others. But I don't question the Bible as much as I question and examine other peoples viewpoints THROUGH the scriptures. People, even some that call themselves Christians and even are well meaning, are very judgemental. I think they get wrapped up in the wrong thing, trying to point out others 'wrong thinking' and therefore they don't find time to examine there own. 1 Thes 5:21,22 21. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 22. Abstain from all appearance of evil. And then: 2 Chronicles 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? My point is that if we don't ask questions and study all the variations of beliefs, how are we to know what is 'good' or 'evil'. So we need to do this for ourselves, NOT others. God will guide you as you grow in Him. Hang in there and just try to understand that the trials we go through will prove to make you strong and wise.......and patient. : ) Good question and God Bless

... You catch them in a lie, or in a paradox that disproves their religion, and they refuse to acknowledge it.
Disproves ? What is your definition of "proof" ? Where is this "proof" ? Even doctoral thesis have errors. Even scientists make mistakes.
...One would think that if their truth was so truthful, they would not have this difficulty. Why is it that non-believers can easily refute anything the believers say, and don't have to resort to this?
You mean like not resorting to the Tooth fairy and Flying Spaghetti monster arguments ? These arguments are "proof" ? Polemic is not proof.
It is their right to choose faith over proof. Just because you say proof (so-called proof at that) is more important, doesn't mean it is so. Lot more comfort found in faith than proof.

WOW that godshield guy is long winded. I lost interest at about paragraph two. If he wants people to read he should really write less.
Anyway, I have never gotten a straight answer or a crooked one from a christian when put in a difficult position.
Most christians don't even know their own material. They just know what their priest or pastor has said. Totally unaware of the contradictions in their book even.
But what do you expect from people who believe such fairytales!!

I'm a christian, and I'm not like that. I understand that it seems silly to other people what I believe in. If I were you, I'd probably be thinking the same thing. i don't push my religion,I'm not insulting you because of my religion, and I don't pity you, so you are being very stereotypical. And i don't think you are crazy for what you believe either...that's just your beliefs, and your beliefs, and/or mine and other Christians like me, aren't hurting you. I don't appreciate being called stupid, or "sheep", or ignorant just because I don't agree with you, I'm a logical enough person, and I just go with my heart on my beliefs...which doesn't make a person less intelligent. That's just the path I choose. Why does everyone care so much about what other people believe? I don't get on yahoo preaching to others about my religion, so why do i want to hear you or anyone else demean mine?

I like you Captain Atheism...I really do! That crazy christian godsheild dude seems like an angry christian to me...and yet he calls Atheists angry...typical hypocritical b*s...
*********************************************************************
I can not believe that guy...I just read his new b*s...I am amazed that I got so much attention. I am so happy!!!
Just in case I gave ANYONE the wrong impression, I am not an atheist. I do not judge ANYONE for what they believe. I look at how people behave. I come on R&S to get a better perspective. I like reading both sides and detirming for myself what works for ME. I saw an angry ranting christian guy who was not appealing to me. I want no part of the God he serves. He judges me with lack of information. Yes, I am on house arrest. Yes, it is for attempted murder. If he countinued to read he would have added that it was self defense. If I was really an attempted murderer I would be in jail awaiting trial. The problem is this country is so messed up even when you defend your own life YOU MUST go through the legal process. The so called " victims" are the ones in jail. You see, I am judging you as a person "Godsheild"...because you are mean and rude. You are bashing Atheist as a whole...not the individual people that have offended you. For the record, I thought you had some valid points, I gave you that star fool! You just are too hypocrital and judgemental for my taste. GOD BLESS YOU...

my opinion on Christians is this...
as a religion its fine, the concepts of whatever, believe what ever you want
but the people in it make it a highly disrespected religion, especially on yahoo answers because of the pushing religion down people's throat thing. and claiming their religion to be the only right one.
i think the Christians should mind their own business, and alot of the web fights would stop. if you track the questions that are involved in an on line argument, its is typically the christian that started the fight, not the atheist, nor is it rarely any other religion.
phew. i can breath now...

Like science, many questions relating to God cannot be answered at this time. We simply don't know because God has not given His children omniscience. Yes, some insult when they can't answer a question, or chide, but so do those who believe science's explanations but can't answer questions. Christians get the same type of responses and answers as they give. Some are polite and educated responses to the questions posed, and some are just rude and intentionally hostile.

people tend to be testy when defending something they believe in.
Lets say that you really like chocolate ice cream and i start ribbing you on how and why vanilla ice cream is better. It would be really hard to have an arguement without mentioning the greatness of chocolate or vanilla ice cream.
Simply, the christains dont have a choice.

We don't refuse to acknowledge anything. We let you know if the scripture is silent on a particular subject. Why don't people of the non-Christian faith accept to what is being said in response to their questions? You are guilty as well for ignoring the truth.
We are to sanctify the Lord God in our hearts and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks us a reason for the hope that is in us, with gentleness and fear.
We do that.
