She will only drink water from the bottle but she would rather drink from a cup.

DO NOT GIVE HER A BOTTLE, OR YOU WILL HAVE TO BREAK HER OF THAT TOO. Just give her a sippy cup, get rid of the gasket as soon as possible for her teeth's sake.

When I decided it was time to quit, I cut out a feeding every week, so this week only feed once in the morning, once at nap time and once at bedtime. Next week, only feed in the morning and bedtime. The following week only feed at either morning or bedtime (we chose bedtime), then in a week only nurse her half as much, then the following week stop completely.

She still needed skin to skin contact, so we did "belly time" my daughter would lay her head on my belly and I would rock her, whenever she was tired, or hurt or just needed mommy.

Now at nearly 3, she rubs one side of my neck, and lays her head on the other shoulder, when she gets tired. Still needing that skin contact. I don't mind at all, and she is happy. (we still sometimes get the hand down the front of my shirt, I am not sure she remembers nursing, but it was their comfort zone for a long time.)

It sounds like the feedings are becoming fewer & farther in between. You could try giving her a sippy cup while holding & cuddling her. That way, you and the baby still get the benefits of being close, but the baby will be transitioning onto a cup. She will get it after a while.

Unfortunately, I could not breastfeed my children (don't know why... I tried it and the babies became dehydrated & lost weight, so I had to put them on formula. Dr.'s couldn't give me a reason why), but I went through much the same scenario when I tried to transfer my son from a bottle to a cup. My daughter transferred just fine from a bottle to a sippy cup, but my son only wanted his bottle. I made the bottle feedings less & less often. After a while, I threw out the bottles & when he got thirsty, he drank from the cup. When he realized it was his only option, he went with it (but he didn't go with it gently!!!).

Good luck!

i don't see what the problem is?

she is only nursing once or twice a day and very very soon those feedings will stop also

i say don't stress about it....she is ONLY a year and half and not even close to being 5 years.....but even if this continues for another year what is the harm?

once she is 4 or 5 years old you WILL miss nursing and then wonder why you felt so pressured to stop when in reality there exists no pressure....it's just the nature of motherhood and it's beautiful

good luck and enjoy her

I nursed my oldest until he was almost 3, tandum nursed for 8 1/2 months, nursed my middle one until he weaned at 2 1/2, and my youngest weaned at 11 months. When I wanted me oldest (who loved to nurse!) to cut back, I just cut out a feeding every few days. When you get up int he morning, change your routine...if you normally lounge in bed, go downstairs and start breakfast and give her a cup of milk. Try distracting. I know it's hard. My oldest is 6 and would probably still breastfeed today if I would let him!

Most unsupplemented babies stop nursing between 12 and 24 months.
She is thirsty when she wakes up - have you tried giving her a sippy cup as she gets out of bed?
Nighttime is cuddle/comfort time - she just needs it a little more than your older one did. Again, give her a drink before you offer to nurse.

you just have to give her a bottle and let her get used to it, if you keep going back to the breast when she won't take it then she will just keep refusing longer and longer knowing she will get her way. Try pumping and putting the breast milk in the bottle and use a bottle with the wide or natural latch nipple. I have never tried going straight from nursing to a sip cup I always went from nursing to a bottle then to a cup. Good Luck.

I breastfeed my daughter until she was 12 1/2 months. My husband I just started giving her a bottle of formula in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one at night. She became so attached to that, that she didn't even want to be breastfeed anymore. I think it only took me a couple weeks to wean her off the breast.

She will stop when she is ready.

In a few months you could start "don't offer, don't refuse" as a weaning technique, but all babies need full fat milk for 2 years, so why not just let it be yours?

Here are some helpful hints!
