You would need to do the following
You would have to determine if
a) you are being sponsored by a family member or an employer
To apply for residency
application fee $325.00- I-130 form (this is just for the Department of Justice to approve that to say they are eligible to apply for a green card)
For work permit $180.00
Adjustment of status $325.00 form I-485 which adjusts their status to legal alien with a "green card" number

As of July 30,2007, the application fees will triple so.....
$1,010 I-130
$ 340 work permit
$1,010- I -485

If it is family based and the family member is
a) not a US citizen and
b) you are over 21 years old
it can take up to 10 years
If the family member is a US citizen. it can take 3 years
If it is an employer
it can take 2 years

If all else fails become an Australian passport holder as they get an automatic green card for the USA if they meet the simplified rules. I think its called a C3

My son took 60 seconds to get his by applying here in the London US Embassy. His wife got hers a short time after arrival in the US.

Pretty well anyone can become an Australian relatively simply after 4 years of living and working in Australia. Go to Immigrationunit.com and talk to them.

You can end up with multiple passports as the UK, Australia and the uSA now all allow multiple citizenships.

Go to uscis.gov for the options. If you have a work sponsor and have your application for H1B in as soon as it opens in April, you have a good shot (about 1 in 2 if you qualified from this years' numbers and visa numbers may be raised). If you don't, it will take longer unless you are from northern Ireland and win in the diversity lottery.

The US State Dept is overwhelmed and exists in the State of Denial. It will take a very long time.
