People have years of impacted waste in their colon and intestines. This waste materials may release toxins into your body which can make you feel ill. A good colon cleanser will flush the impacted feces along with the toxins. In some cases you may even experience some weight loss and even an increase in energy. It's unnecessary unless you are constipated or are having a medical procedure such as a colonscopy.

The big secret is that it is just fancy and expensive name for laxative. A laxative, by the way, is cheaper and does the same thing although those selling you the Colonics package will never tell you that (think scam).

The dangers include bacterial infection (for placing foreign object where they don't belong), electrolyte (salt and mineral) imbalance, postassium loss leading to heart stopping, and perforation (puncture or breakage) of intestinal walls.

Not to mention that it could be harmful to the digestive tract. But those selling you the product will never tell you that.

According to my health-conscious, earthy-crunchy sister (who LOVES "high-colonics"...ugh!), they can either be given through the *ahem!* back-end (like an enema, but MUCH longer and with ingredients like herbs, etc). Or you can take them orally, Either way, don't plan on traveling after one of these! They're supposed to cleanse the intestinal tract of toxins, free radicals (cancer-causing elements) and rotting meat that has built up in there. It's supposed to improve your immune system, energy and also your digestion.

I'd rather just fast for a few days and drink LOTS of water!

There are all kinds of myths about how good it is for the body to clean up in there. It's high up the pseudoscience index and mentioned in college-level classes like Science and Pseudoscience. (Detoxing the liver is higher.)

That's what they are, myths. If you have normal elimination and no abdominal pain, you don't need to clean a thing, except for washing your hands afterward.

They're used so that when you go bouncy-bouncy in that way, you won't get poop all over your package.

Side effects: you lose that distinctive smell.
