Our village is wanting to build a boat ramp along the Ohio River. The Historical Socity has brought in people from Columbus to DIG. So far they have found what they THINK is an old Indian Oven and some animal bones. Also, they have found some old tin cans and bottels. I have no idea how much it is costing the tax payers for this silly DIG, but why is it that every time someone wants to build something, the History buffs get involved. Most of what the find is junk and we are paying for stupid sillyness. Do they really think they are going to find GRANTS TOMB, maybe a space ship from yesteryear or what???

Yes, I think that this idea that we have to preserve evey old dump or ruin as an important archaelogical treasure has gone much too far

In many cases this sort of thing is devastating to private property owners.

A private property owner wanting to build or house or a commercial building can be bankrupted paying for the financing on the property while the politicians spend years excavating these sites.

The owners of the properties where these sites are found are rarely compensated for their losses.

We have practically no archaeological heritage in much of the US, so when something is found, it's a big deal. We need to preserve what little history we have, because there isn't even that much from Native Americans.

Money is set aside for these things--it's not like the money would be spent on your boat ramp if they weren't digging.

Stop being such a brat.

The value of history is incalculable. By excavating the site and preserving what is found we learn about the past and hopefully add to the future. We won't know what message the past can tell us if we don't examine what was left behind. You may be frustrated because it interferes with recreation right now but in the long ruin the knowledge and artifacts gained can really enrich your community and may even boost tourism.

Millions and millions of American tax money gets wasted on silly stuff like this. I am all for preserving our history, but your story is way over the top. It is hilarious how much money gets spent on this stuff.
