In North Carolina, it does not appear that having a ticket is basis for retaking the written exam.

"The vision and traffic sign recognition tests are always required for a license renewal."

You'd have to retake the written and driving tests if your license is expired at the time you want to renew it. As long as you're renewing your license while it's still valid, it does not appear that you'll have to re-take the written test.

I took the test myself 7 years ago to be exact. I will tell you there is NOTHING to be afraid of! In Hickory, NC, on 127, for the road test all you have to do is drive out of the parking lot, maintain 45 for 1 quarter mile, turn, do a 3 point reverse, and head back. It is that simple! Just remember to always signal. That is a big one in Catawba County! GOOD LUCK- pal!
