Not entirely. If you stop working out, you will lose some of the muscle, but not all of it. If you eat a healthy diet and stay somewhat active, then you can probably maintain your physique just by doing that. You lose muscle mass by not using them at all or by eating an unhealthy diet. You use most of your musles just by doing everyday activities, walking around, washing dishes, vaccuming, picking something up off the floor. If you work a desk job though, you spend a lot of time sitting down not doing much moving, so it would probably be a good idea to spend some time at the gym lifting weights or even just running on the treadmill or elliptical.

Ok, hold on a minute. You were SUPER underweight due to anorexia. Then you gained a lot of muscle back.

If you stop weight lifting, but you keep eating normally (*not* like an anorexic) I seriously doubt you will lose all the muscle. Your problem was that you were literally starving yourself. You were WAY under your normal muscle mass.

So if you stop weight lifting, but you still eat right, you may lose some muscle, but you won't drop to your anorexia muscle levels. However, the more muscle you have, the better things will be for you (and the more fat your will burn, which will keep you toned and trim). Also, as others have mentioned, as you get older (into your 30s, 40s 50s 60s and beyond) you are going to slowly lose muscle mass over time. The *solution* to that problem is to keep exercising!

It's true. You lose muscle mass if you don't keep working out. As you get older, the rate of muscle loss accelerates.
