Because your accident occurred on private property the only thing the police will do is insure that owner information is exchanged! Not being aware of what state the accident occurred in...I can only say you have up to 24 hours in my state to report certain accidents exceeding a certain amount in damages.
Accidents happen and there is nothing to be afraid over! Attempt to contact the owner and make things right!
I admire you for your courage to do the right thing and to accept responsibility for your actions...which is what many lack in today.
Best wishes!

Okay, you sound like a stand up guy so I'll tell you what I would do in your situation.
First, try to find the owner or the car yourself by going back there (I don't know if this was near a house or business). IF you can find them, bring cash and a reciept book.
Pay them for the damages (this is not the time to haggle over estimates, remember this person could easily call 911 and have you arrested for hit and run).
Pay the person, have them sign the reciept saying they recieved cash for damage caused by you.
Here's why:
A civil judgement will make criminal prosecution impossible. Once the police find out their victim accepted payment for the damges, the criminal case is compromised.
I just saved your butt.

you may get ticketed for leaving the scene and any other violations that apply, (do you have insurnace and legal DL etc as all of that stuff will be checked and you may get ticketed for any of that stuff). you may get checked for outstanding warrants as well. BUT what you are doing is the correct thing and your actions will help mitigate possible charges. (i.e. you will be given benefit of the doubt)
of course you will be liable for damages to other car and your insurance will go up.
if all of your ducks are in a row and you are legal, i would not go back to the scene. i would call the cops, and tell them exactly what you said here. let the police deal with the other car owner just in case. this kind of thing happens more than you might think and is not that big of a deal. GL with it!

Go back to the scene, and attempt to find the owner of the vehicle. If you can not locate the owner, but the car is still there, write down all your information, and leave it under the windshield wiper.

Try to find the car's owner and explain what happened. There is no need to make it a criminal issue. Just apologize and tell the owner that you are trying to make amends. If the owner has not reported it then you should be ok.

i think there is a very slight chance that you will be arrested. the people that own the car will probably just be glad that you came back. get all your information (dl#, insurance, etc.) and give it to them... you don't need to file a police report since it wasn't a major accident, but call your insurance company because it will need to be reported to your dmv. good luck, i applaud you for going back and making it right.

Chances are they will try to get you in touch with the owner of the car so that you can handle the insurance and getting their car fixed.
If no one was hurt then I doubt they will care much.
