The main things to do are to avoid straining and constipation - so eat enough fibre and drink enough fluid to keep your stools soft so that tearing is minimised. Even take mild laxatives sometimes if you need to, but try not to do this often because they cause dependence. Psyllium husks with water or juice before bed can help keep everything regular. Prune juice and bitter foods before meals can also help, as can having a large glass of warm-hot water with lemon juice in it first thing in the morning.

If you think you have an anal fissure because of bleeding, it is pretty important that you get the bleeding checked. If it is fresh blood on the toilet paper, then it is most likely an anal fissure or a bleeding haemorrhoid, but get it checked just to make sure.

Both anal fissures and bleeding haemorrhoids can be treated by applying a cream with calendular and witch hazel. Some St John's wort in the cream helps healing too, and helps kill some of the bugs that you really don't want to get into your blood stream through the tear.

I hope this helps, but please get teh bleeding checked. I wish you all the best.

An anal fissure is a cut or tear occuring in the anus (the opening through which stool passes out of the body) that extends upwards into the anal canal. Fissures are a common condition of the anus and anal canal and are responsible for 6-15% of the visits to a colonic and rectal (colorectal) surgeon. They affect men and women equally and both the young and the old. Fissures usually cause pain during bowel movements that often is severe. Anal fissure is the most common cause of rectal bleeding in infancy.

if it is an anal fissure, the only treatment is antibiotics and surgery. My son has dealt with one three times before they finally cleared it up.
hemmorhoids will respond to preparation H for a short time but eventually you will need to see a doctor for hydrocortisone suppositories, either way, you need to see a doctor.

First confirm with your doctor which it is. You can apply warm compresses to relieve the discomfort or Preparation H and or Tucks pads. But, again, confirm with your doctor which it is.
