I have a Canon 8mp camera. I see different numbers on line anyone have any experience with this?

well - it depends. If pics are stored in a compressed format like jpeg it's more than if the pics are in RAW format. It also depends what resolution you are really using when shooting.
If you already have the camera simply check how many memory let's say 20 pics need or if you already have a smaller card check how many pics it takes and then multiply.
So it really depends on the actual file size of each picture.

Shooting at 8 MP, my chart shows about 256 shots.
