Depends on what you want it for, and what type of knife you want. Spyderco makes great all purpose folding knives in all sizes. When it comes to fixed blades I am quite partial to Gerber and Cold Steel knives. Of course cost is also an important consideration. Puma makes some very good hunting knives, but they will cost you. Schrade is also a good all around, mass produced knife maker. I have a nice Bali Song, which is the company that became Benchmade, and it is a quality knife. I don't like Buck folders as much as I think the factory actions are too stiff. Anyway I don't think you can go too wrong with any of these makers. It just depends on your personal preference.

Depends on what you are looking for You want classic Italian then Frank Beltrame is one of the best. His brother Alberto Beltrame makes a little less expensive line.

American made ones have already been listed by others here. A decent and less expensive line comes from Mikovknives.com. These will range in price from 50 to 500.00.

You can also get custom jobs for around 2 grand. But for everyday carry you'll have to decide what it is you want as far as style. That'll narrow the choices down alot.

Boker, Gerber, and Cold Steel all make good quality automatic knives. If you can find an old Smith & Wesson automatic knife, they are good as well.

I have a Boker and a Smith & Wesson. I am quite happy with both of them.

Benchmade. The military issues them to some troops in Iraq. They're pretty damn good.
