I'm in the market for a new car, I've only previously had used cars -- either this year or last year's models. I'm wanting to go under $20,000 (and pay less than $200 per month in payments). I'm leaning towards a sedan or coupe, rather than a compact just for storage space.

What are the quality models you would recommend, both for looks and performance? When is a good date to buy? Thanks!

I love my Civic LX sedan. But as far as cars go.. If you want to save money on a NEW car but want a USED price. Ask dealers to show you OLDER, NEW cars. EVERY dealer has a few on the lot. But they usually won't advertise them. These are cars that employees/family/friends always get first crack at. Often just 1 or 2 years old. As for good dates to buy. If you want the new car to be the current year's model, Start seriously looking in Sepember and October when the next year's cars start coming in and the dealer needs to make room for them.

I would recommend a Civic sedan. Why the sedan over the coupe? Before buying, check with your insurance company on rates of the different cars you're considering, you'll find sedans are consistantly cheaper to insure than coupes, even coupes that are the same make/model (like Civic).

If you really want a coupe, definitely consider the Scion tC. The Scions are bargain Toyotas, so you can't go wrong there either.

Good Luck!

Go for one of these:
Honda Civic (very economical and great gas mileage...I have an '07)
Nissan Sentra (great new body style, economical and good gas mileage)
Toyota Yaris (extremely economical and good gas mileage)

Others are:
Chevy Cavalier-this one comes in a coupe and sedan. Very hearty cars
Hyundai Elantra-extremely popular and good gas mileage

All those listed above perform well. A good date to buy is after September, you can pretty much name your price.

Try going to a rental co. and get one of theirs. You'll save a bunch of money and you will still have the warranty. You will also know that maintenance was performed on the car. There is also room to haggle on the price with them. Good luck with the car.

Jeep Wrangler!!!

Great convertible in the summer, excellent reliablity, good resale value, and just generally a great vehicle for a young guy.

Hyundai Elantra. Very inexpensive, great fit and finish, comfortable, and great on gas. Not very sexy, but extremely reliable and practical. I paid 15,000 for everything (TTL) and the payments were 145.00 per month.
