Does it give you an error message when this occurs? Does this computer have the latest patches from Microsoft? And do you have anti-virus software? This sounds similar to the old blaster worm- definitely run a complete virus scan first, then make sure you're up-to-date on your service packs....

The original versions of XP (prior to SP1) are vulnerable- so if you're talking about a machine that was recently wiped & re-installed from CD, this could happen.

Also, check to make sure your screen saver settings aren't incredibly short (like a minute) It could just be logging you off when it blanks the screen.

Its definitely a virus. If you have vital info you cant afford to loose then you cant format the hard drive. Try these two options.
1. Remove that hard drive and add it to another computer as an extra drive (NB: MAKE SURE THIS COMPUTER HAS AN UPDATED ACTIVE ANTIVIRUS RUNNING ON IT). Simply scan the drive. Youll discover a nasty little trojan. When youre done simply pop your hard drive back where it belongs.
2. Use a boot time antivirus to remove it.

I think someone is logging into your account. Change your password and see if it still happens.
