The kind of militarism that was instilled in Japanese society between the world wars lead to an attitude of sacrifice among the population that made surrender unthinkable. The Japanese leaders were preparing for mass mobilization of the populace to resist an invasion. The atomic bomb attacks allowed the emperor to personally intervene to order the surrender, the first time a modern emperor took direct action in Japanese politics. While surrender to conventional military forces was unthinkable to the Japanese concept of honor, surrender to a 'super weapon' that could not be defeated was, if only marginally. That combined with the fact that the emperor couldn't be disobeyed produced the surrender. The previous conventional firebomb raids had already produced more death and destruction than the atomic bombs did. It wasn't the amount of destruction that mattered, it was that it was produced by a single bomb. If they they had been mass produced, which everyone at the time thought they were, then all of Japans cities and most of her population could have been wiped out without a single U.S. soldier setting foot in Japan. Courage and the spirit of Bushido had no way to oppose such an opponent.

Read up on what Japanese soldiers were like when the Marines were Island hopping and you'll have a good idea what an invasion of mainland Japan would have been like. They would very rarely surrender, and would literally fight to the death. There was a draft in Japan similar to Germany to form a home guard of men and women to defend the island. People love to armchair quarterback dropping the bomb, but i agree with the decision and encourage people to do their research before opening their mouth. We killed more people with the firebombing of Japan than with the bomb, but most people dont know their history

Yamamoto knew that Japan had woke a "sleeping giant" at Pearl Harbor. The German command, that is the real soldiers and not the Nazi flunkies, knew the were going to get whipped. So why did the axis countries not stop.
It is kind of like what Iran's leaders are doing today. They have bunkers to hide in and they don't think "poking the bear" can cause us to strike.
The axis was so blinded by it's own ambitions and it's people believed in it's leaders propaganda, that they actually thought that they could win.

Cause Japanese at the time people are focused like that. It tells you a lot about why the country had officials where none are under 55 years of age and the young people are feeling worthless or trying to kill themselves. The few that don't have manly or womanly support groups and cliques. Go to Japan and see for yourself. It's kinda sad really.
Oh yea, take a face mask with you on the train.

We dropped the atomic bomb in order to preclude an invasion of the Japanese Home Islands that would have resulted in thousands of Allied casualities. It was also a bit of pay-back for the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor and for the numerous war crimes and atrocities committed by the Japanese throughout the course of the war. (Japan's inhuman treatment of prisoners is well documented). In addition, it was also used as an example of the military might of the U.S. in order to put Stalin on notice that we could take him out if we had to. The reason the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki just three days after Hiroshima was to give the Japs the impression that we had an unlimited supply of these awesome weapons.

You have to understand the Japanese and undrstand how they view samurai. It is better for a samurai to die than to live in shame. The Japanese army was made to believe that they were the embodiment of the samurai. That is why there were people volunteering to become Kamikaze pilots.

If I remember correctly, the CONSERVATIVE estimates of allied dead was something close to a one million to take Japan. That was not even counting the Japanese dead.

It's kind of weird to say it, but dropping "The Bomb" actually save lives on both sides.

thank goodness President Truman had the 'cahonies' to drop the bomb. If we had not done that there would have been hundreds of thousands of japanese and americans killed if we had invaded Japan. The japanese were riled into an a fanatical state of religious rightousness and even the children and women would have fought to the death. So...the bomb stunned the Japanese leadership into surrendering...
Thank goodness they did.

Ummmm, because their head of state would have kept throwing their soldiers into the caldron! Japanese and Militant Islamic fighters have a lot in common...they are willing to kill themselves for their cause and do so with a smile.

You refer to the atom-bomb, I assume? They new they were losing but that didn't change the fact that they were proud of their culture, heritage, nation, and Emperor who was considered god-like. Would you die to defend your home and family?
